Large turn-out challenges Capn Carbon and GOG.

Saturday Sept 5th.

Saturday’s ride was one of if not the largest gathering to date for the Thorns and Roses.
It was made extra special by several guests who elected to ride with the group.
In attendance:

Todd Pechner – Slow Todd
Kathy Blum – Special guest and MS150 Hibernian Team member with Kevin and Theresa
Dennis Heffernan – Special guest and MS150 Team Captain of the Hibernian team.
Tray Wofford – – he is a CAT 3 Racer and was there to check the group out and to ride with his family he was brother of Taylor Wofford (DOC).
John Wofford – Special guest and DAD to (DOC). A very strong rider who was happy to ride (GOG’s) classic bike.
Josh Carter – Moving Violation – Congrats on his continued strong finishes in his races. He is finishing consistently in the money. He may have to take out special insurance on his legs since they are making money for him. He would not want anything to happen to them so getting insurance from Loyds of London could protect his income from being impacted if something catastrophic would happen to those strong legs.
Beth Gonzales
Mary Walton

Megan Hegarty – Fist time with the group and was invited by Nicole Lewis
Gray Talley
Dwight Mouton – new dad
Steve Cope – Capn Carbon
Tim Devinney – The Love Train
Jeff Giordano – Claim Jumper
Kevin Smit – GOG
Theresa Smit – Mother Theresa.

Suzanne McBee – the first to arrive at the start and could be considered a Very Special Guest. Now With a Nickname read on to learn what it is.

The write up for this days ride is being provided by Capn Carbon with the perspective of the ride from the Thorns. With input from Sproadic Steve who helped Some of the Thorns find their way home when dropped (NOT THE SPIRIT of the ride) by the Thorns.
This write up is further augmented by Dwight Mouton who rode with the Thorns until they left him at a stop light ( again NOT THE SPIRIT of the ride). His account of the ride can be found at his blog
http://go-moot-go.blogspot.com/2009/09/col-de-lystra.html

SO NOW YOU FULLY GRASP what happens when the THORNS TAKE CONTROL.....

NO Stems were dropped and all enjoyed the ride. Many even said they LOVED BIG WOODS.
Consider this the next time you decide to ride with the Thorns (Take No Prisoners) or Stems (No drop lots of fun and well calculated challenges) or Roses (mileage and average speed has no purpose).

GOG rode with the stems and has failed to provide his account of the chaos that transpired on the ride. Stems became Thorns with some Thorns then riding with the stems, and some Thorns breaking off to do their own thing.

Let it be known that Patti Lewis (Patti Melt), Sheila Augustine, and Theresa Smit (Mother Theresa) all previous ROSES are now Solid Stems and soon could be ready to regularly hang with the Thorns.

The following is provided by Capn Carbon – Thank You Capn. Notice his Writing style is closing in on the Writing style of GOG. Also notice that he is slowing down and his riding style is closing in on the riding style of GOG.

From Capn
To respect everyone’s time, I will keep this blog posting as brief as possible!

Several major shocking moments before the ride even began. When Capn arrived at Bruggers at 7, Suzanne McBee was already there – what, how could this be??? She had promised free coffee and beer to everyone if she did not make it to the coffee shop by 7 and that was all of the motivation that she needed – MAJOR OMG. Second shock was coming out of Bruggers at 7:20 and turning the corner to see the mob that had accumulated in the parking lot. WOW, was there a huge group of riders. A record breaking turnout for sure with several very strong first timers including Karen, Mary, and Doc’s bro and padre and others I am sure I have overlooked – sorry. Lots of regulars were there including Slow Tim, Green Flash, Frank, Coach Shawn, GOG, Theresa, Love Train, Slow Todd, Doc, Sporadic Sporano and his better half Carolyn, Josh (Moving Violation), Jeff (not #6, not downhill racer, and not the one with a broken collar bone, aka Claim Jumper), Christi the Pink Triassholete, Barbara, John, Dwight, Joe, Sherri, Willi, and on and on and on. GOG has the full list (see above). There were too many ladies for Capn to remember and keep up with – is that possible? One other fact that shocked Capn was that Slow Todd was there but was basically invisible for the day with no attacks, no snide remarks - almost as if he was not there at all. Maybe he was still sore about the pack discarding him last week when he blew a spoke or maybe he had other issues on his mind like his genetic disorder that prevents him from riding up hills fast. Anyway, after a brief lecture by the GOG, the mad mob rolled out of Bruggers and headed out through Preston.

GOG and Capn looked at each other and knew this was going to be both trouble and a lot of fun. Lots of chit/chat and bantering from the get-go. Joe was proudly riding his new full carbon race machine and looking forward to putting it to the test. Initially, there was some disorganization on Ron’s Pull as everyone was looking for Ron to set the pace and receive his due respect. Ron was a no show today so Capn had to assume the point position and he steadily ramped up the speed (as Ron would have done) which got all of the Thorns twitchie, aggitated, and ready for a fight. The Green Flash, Josh, Jeff (Claim Jumper - not #6, not with the broken collar bone) and others quickly blew past Capn who was in oxygen deficit by this point and needed some draft relief. Capn recovered enough to put the hammer down for one last pass to squeak out the win - GOG owes Capn $100. This front group then stopped to wait for the GOG and the others. They waited and waited and waited and waited. The Green Flash could not wait any more and nominated the group to move on.

With mixed emotions, the group agreed and dropped the GOG knowing it might not be “In the spirit of the ride”. The group then got disorganized again after crossing 55 and up past the fire station. Capn went back to check on GOG and others who might still be trying to catch the group. He was looking for Doc’s bro who was a Cat 3 racer and felt like he had a score to settle or a bone to pick (remember that Capn is not playing with a full deck of cards). The angry mob of Thorns took this opportunity to dramatically pick up the pace and enjoyed dropping Capn and several others who were trying to chase them down. Everyone regrouped at the end of the next road (no idea what it is called but is the opposite direction of Up Chuck hill. (That would be Yates Store).

The group then formed a pace line and rolled at an awesome pace toward 751 on Old Kelley road. It was there that the Green Flash busted out of the group to claim the first Durham County line sign - GOG owes Green Flash $100. However. shortly afterwards, the second and MUCH larger Durham County line sign was claimed by Capn as he was the only one who remembered there was 2 county signs. Everyone agreed that that sign was worth double due to the size - GOG owes Capn $200.

The group continued to hammer at a good clip before hacking a left off of 751 and onto Stage Coach road. It was there that Suzanne got trapped at the front riding side by side with Capn. As expected, she was gabbing (FOR EVER NOW KNOWN AS GABBY) while riding her bike at full throttle. Then a long steady climb forced her to pull back as she could no longer talk and ride fast from the front of the pack. Suzanne retreated, got draft relief, and continued gabbing to whoever would listen.
A left turn off of Stage Coach followed by the fist right but the pack onto Old Farrington. The Thorns continued to devour hill after hill on their way up to the Lystra gas station. At several times. the pace line ramped up to over 25 mph but the group stayed tight. The pace was being pushed by the Green Flash, Coach Shawn, Frank, Jeff, Sherri, Willie, Love Train, Slow Todd, and others. Awesome job!

A well deserved break and then the group waited and waited and waited for the GOG and the Stems to arrive at the Lystra Gas Station (planed rest stop). It was here that the Love Train admitted that he was still a little grouchy but said that Lystra would cure him in a few minutes. Christi the pink triaassholeete was NOT feeling well and did not look good (should a guy ever say this to a girl?). However, she did recover and finished 50 miles with the Stems. Josh had a race the next day so decided to bolt back to the parking lot and cut it short. He is a wise man for his age. Finally, GOG and the Stems arrived just at the Thorns could not wait any longer and were mounting up for Cul-de-Lystra. Several riders switched groups from the Stems (as they wanted more workout than the GOG could provide) to the Thorns including Sporadic Sporano, Nicole, and Megan.

Off the group (Thorns) went toward Lystra. This was Karen’s, Dwight’s and Megan’s, and several others first ride up the famed “Cul-de-Lystra”. After climbing this minor hill, they all wondered what the big deal was and why everyone is so afraid of this stretch of the road. As the Thorns approached Lystra, the Green Flash attacked early and mounted a huge lead heading up this small mole hill (Lystra). This provoked a massive attack from the group which shattered the peloton. Eventually, Capn caught up with the Green Flash and the 2 battled it out to the top with lots of blood being spilled. Then Capn came back down Lystra to help harrass Nicole and Megan and encourage them up the hill. Remember, Megan did this riding with platform pedals – ouch – GREAT JOB.

From there Capn struggled to catch the lead group who was already at the 15/501 intersection. The angry mob decided to roll on and drop Capn, Nicole, Megan, Sporadic, Joe, and Dwight who were all assuming that everyone would regroup at the light. Joe and Dwight got caught by the light and then joined up with 2 other riders that they thought were with our angry mob – Wrong! Capn chased down the lead group just in time to miss the turn (thanks to Love Train) at Jack Bennett and then caught a raft of SH#% from the group. Everyone should know by now that Capn is directionally challenged and never should be followed or taken too seriously! It was at that point that Joe and Dwight got separated from the front group of Thorns – not good as they then had to ride all the way back on their own. Major apologies by the ride leader (Capn) for letting this happen on a “no drop” ride.

After turning on Jack Bennett, things got a bit crazy and the ride got very interesting. Just prior to the big downhill, Capn yelled out to Jeff (not #6) and Wilie that they must have been out drinking late the prior night based on the very slow speed they were riding. Well, that was all it took for Willie to put the hammer down and take off like a rocket. Frank was hot on his tail closely followed by Claim Jumper, Capn, and a huge trail of strong ladies. Then, out of the blue, Sherri kicked in full testosterone and dropped everyone going down that steep hill. She just smiled as she raced past her husband Willie and everyone else. Unbelievable performance. This got Frank and the Green Flash agitated and they tried with no success to chase her down. GOG owes Sherri at least $300 for this effort which shocked everyone. Capn was devastated and retreated to the back of the pace line which was actually very nice as all of the strong lady riders had aligned themselves in a tight draft line, and were planning to take out the other guys as they collapsed one by one.

Capn commented that he would rather ride in the perfume fumes (Karen, Mary, Barbara, Suzanne, etc.) than behind the likes of Claim Jumper, Frank, Green Flash, Love Train, and the others just up ahead. The group collected and rolled up to the Lystra Gas Station intersection. Capn asked if everyone was there and sensed a few were missing.

Later is was learned of others who were missing at this point.

The next paragraph is supplied by Sporadic Steve Sparano as he recounts the events that took place as the Thorns continued the SHRED any and all who dared to ride with them.

(Here's a potential entry for Saturday's ride blog: (from Sporadic Steve)
On Saturday's ride when I was helping Nicole and Meaghan return from the carnage known as the Thorns, we were passed by a somewhat familiar figure...it only took a second to retrieve the ancient memory stores that would allow me to recall this rider. After a moment of cerebral processing, I realized it was none other than Mr David Bridenbaugh. I recognized him as he cruised by (like we were standing still), I called out 'is that Bridenbaugh', the figure turned and said Hi. He slowed, we said Hi, shook hands, and chatted briefly...we finished by saying that once the start time gets later, he will be joining us.

As he was about to continue his ride, I mentioned that Steve Cope was up ahead and that he could probably catch him. As if a lightning bolt hit him, his eyes lit up, he shifted, cranked hard, I blinked, and he was gone..like the legendary but rarely seen...The Ghost of Bridenbaugh. )

Thank you Sporadic Steve for continuing to understand the Sprit of a NO DROP ride

Now back to the write up as best Capn Carbon could recall.

The angry mob wanted nothing of a break and just rolled down the hill increasing the speed as they chewed up the miles. The group rode across the lake bridge at a high speed and took a left onto some woman’s chapel road (Martha Chapel). At the turn, Sherri, Willie, and Suzanne all went straight in pursuit of MORE miles as they clearly did not get enough workout from the Thorns. They are all training for an upcoming triathlon and needed more miles – at least that is what they said. The group pressed on without the “triassholetes”. It was there that Karen, Mary, and Barbara demonstrated a lot of strong riding and their ability to ride hard up the long steady climb while in full conversation. The Green Flash and several others broke away from the main group but were eventually chased down by the peloton.
At one point coming up the hill, one of the ladies was overheard (by others in the group) that they were feeling “Thorny” based on how well they were riding. This caused quite a stir within the main pack as several riders overheard the comment and thought (hard to hear with wind in the helmet) they heard something different than “Thorny”.
After that point, several of the stronger riders suddenly pulled back and rode in the trail of perfume wondering what was actually said and who said it. A right onto 751 and then a quick left at the strawberry patch had the group heading straight for the county line. Since Josh and Brian Farkas were not there, the threat of a massive sprint attack was not on everyone’s minds. However, like normal, Claim Jumper picked up the pace and bolted for the line with Capn, and Frank in tow. It was close, maybe too close to call, but one thing was for sure…. Frank and Capn were both wasted after the sprint attempt and Frank commented that he may have had too much Boyland Bridge brew the night before.
A left, then right, and through the 3 ugly sisters (Nicole’s Roller Coaster) before heading for the fire station and the 55 intersection.
Then, Capn made a comment that “may” have been taken out of context by the ride group. He was very impressed by the bike rack that Mary had on the back of her classic steel frame bike. He went on to say that he had a steel framed bike (Mean Green Machine) that he rode across the country and that it had 2 nice racks on it. It then became obvious that Mary was not following why Capn was commenting about why his bike’s racks were better than hers.
Then it happened… Capn blurted out “Mary, you have a very nice rack”. !.!!!@#$! Well, the long train (not LOVE TRAIN) of strong ladies with the perfume draft all clearly heard Capn’s comment BUT DID NOT HAVE THE FULL CONTEXT of the conversation. At this point, Mary blushed but did not apologize for her nice rack and the ride continued as Capn got glaring looks from the rest of the ladies.

The only remaining challenge for the day was Capn’s Graveyard which runs along the railroad tracks the opposite direction of Ron’s Pull. In the past, Capn would routinely crank up the pace and the group got dropped. Well, this has not happened for many many weeks as either Capn is getting weaker, the Thorns are getting stronger, or both. Capn gave it everything left in the tank and pushed the pace well above 25 mph to only look back and see a long string of strong riders on his tail. He eventually pulled over to have the Green Flash blast on for the final sprint points – GOG owes Green Flash $100. Capn told Claim Jumper that the section of the road should be renamed to Capn’s Pull instead of Capn’s Graveyard as he no longer has the juice. Claim Jumper quickly responded by saying the name is still perfect but the meaning has just changed over time. Capn is simply being buried by the group week after week so the name is still valid.

WHATEVER.

A final regrouping and down to the coffee/bagel shop for well deserved refreshments following the 50 mile ride at a 19.2 mph average. TOTALLY awesome ride, incredible day, and a great ride group.

The Stems did 51 miles at a 17 mph pace that included a time trial run down Big Woods with Tray Wofford and his dad John taking first and second.

The Roses rode into RTP area covering the 30 miles at a 15 mph pace. But who realy validates this anyway.

Sundays ride.

Today’s ride was shaping up to be a relaxed ride compared to the Madness of Saturday’s
Ride mayhem and mob.

The pack was happy to ride together and to enjoy a more subdued style ride.
Relaxed and fun loving is the best way to describe the day’s ride.

A bullet dash recount of the days ride.

  • The route is not important.
  • The speed was not important.
  • The banter was limited.
  • The Spirit of the Ride was the Best Ever.
  • The Love Trains singing was FAN-OMINAL as he serenaded the ladies on Holland Chapel road (aka Waffle Run) – American Idol is in his future. THORNS GOT TALLENT.
  • The fact that Claim jumper disrespected GOG not once but Twice on Kevin’s Crawl,
    IS IMPORTANT.
  • The fact that GOG rode his fixed Gear bike is Note Worthy – and still Claim Jumper had the nerve to disrespect GOG.
  • The fact that Capn Carbon felt compelled to Jump into the CSH ride as the Thorns and Roses were completing their ride is ONLY PATHETIC. Look for an Intervention session to save Capn Carbon.
  • 34 miles at 17 ish mph pace but who really cares.

The group assembled behind Brueggers with Kevin straining to remember names. He did bring with him the emergency contact list that helped him quickly check off those who were in attendance. Kevin was so rusty at organizing/leading the group that he failed to introduce David Cole to the pack. Kevin also knew from the start that he would have to turn Capn Carbon and the Thorns loose early in the days ride due to the dynamics of the group. After a 10 minute late start the pack was off. Ron Clanton did not provide his normal alarm clock service to the ride leaders and allowed them to dilly dally far too long.

The groups rolled out of the parking lot and onto HighHouse with the Roses holding back forming the first gap/separation of intent.

The riders were joined on the climb up High House by Todd and Christy Pechner as they had ridden towards the start from their home. All finished the climb followed by the flowing right turn and immediate left into the neighborhood of Preston Corners. The pace remained a comfortable 16 mph as the group was warming up both physically and mentally. Each rider was participating in various chit chat with an occasional SLAM on one another as things slowly warmed up. On the climb in Preston Slow Todd was explaining how his rear derailleur had blow apart on an earlier ride and had to be replaced. The shop told him he was lucky that the derailleur had not taken out any spokes as it slammed into the wheel during its destruction.
The Thorns and Stems were all still together as they rolled thru the green light on Davis and into the round-about. The pace was slowly climbing to 18 mph with the pack all still enjoying conversation and occasional banter.

David Cole (new to this group) was riding in the middle of the group absorbing the aura (learning the Spirit of the ride). David is a very strong rider and was here to check the group out to see if it is worth his valuable riding time to continue to associate with this unruly/disorganized/inconsistent/informal/non-club of cyclists. We all hope he sees some value in the way the group rides so he comes back and rides again with the group. David is a strong supporter of Cycling in the area and is a natural leader as well as a fun person to be around. I think once he warms up to the group he will be more than capable of slinging his share of Trash Talk on others.

The Thorns and Stems were directed to make the left turn from Lewis Stevens onto Carpenter Upchurch, pointing them all back towards High House and eventually into Apex. “As we head into Apex remember no more than two abreast and make sure you obey all traffic lights and signs” GOG was heard reminding the group of APEX’s crack down on cyclists. The group was now getting itchy having just been given a clear directive of heading towards Apex. The Thorns jumped on it hard as they made that left turn. Kevin was in the middle of the group keeping an eye on Theresa and other potential Stems to see how well they reacted to the sudden movement by the Thorns. “I Got a Problem” was heard by Kevin as he slowed to look around as to what the issue maybe and who it was. He discovered that Slow Todd was already off his bike and looking at his rear wheel. “I Think I blew a Spoke” Todd went on to describe. “Capn” yelled Kevin in an attempt to let him know to hold up the pack. By now half the Stems and all the Thorns had jumped through the next light and had already made their turn towards Apex. “Hold em Up” shouted Capn to the others as they were pulling away. Capn turned and joined GOG to see if there was any assistance they could provide Slow Todd.
Sure enough a spoke on the freewheel side of the rear wheel was broken at the hub. In looking to see if the spoke could be removed and the tire trued they learned that the spokes and rim combination did not allow for any adjustments other than with special tools. Slow Todd came to the realization that he was done for the day. Luckily he was only three blocks from home. He bent the broken spoke around a good one to keep it from flopping around and then limped back home from there. GOG and Capn both now turned their attention to the rest of the pack.

The group reassembled and headed towards the first major climb and attack of the day that would take place on Old Jenks Carpenter Road. Those participating in this first attack included, Moving Violation, the Green Flash, and Capn Carbon. Others were happy to watch the attack take place. This did result in the pack being stretched out with “Mother Theresa” brining up the rear. As she and several others were working their way to the top of the hill the pack rolled on thru making the left turn towards Apex. This was a signal that the “Thorns” had been held up long enough with the broken spoke and the slow hill climbers.
GOG circled at the top of the hill allowing the “Thorns” to pull away from those still struggling on the hill.

The gap grew bigger as the “Thorns” formed a pace line and increased their speeds towards 21 mph with the trailing riders now at the top of the hill and looking for a chance to recover. Mother Theresa was being protected by Deb Hollis (Two Saddles) as they both were now cresting the hill. GOG was joined by Carrie Zelna (Mother Goose) who was looking to ride with Mother Theresa. So GOG was now in the presence of Two Mothers, and Two Saddles. Mother Goose and Mother Theresa along with Deb Hollis (two Saddles).
At the light on Davis and Old Jenks the Four riders were now all alone, no Thorns in sight. Once thru the light these four headed towards North Salem and the rough potholes of Apex. Just as they approached the underpass at Highway 64 they saw Patti Melt who had deliberately fallen off the pace line to check on the Two Mothers, Two Saddles, and GOG.
Now four became five and the Stems were officially formed as a group. The Thorns were seen in the distance waiting at a red light. Capn Carbon had held back to discuss with GOG how to proceed. “I got to let these guys go, they are already tired of waiting” Capn explained to GOG. “I agree” GOG replied. “The route today goes thru Apex, Tingen, Friendship, Sharron Harris, Old Highway 1, Beaver Dam, Stop at Wilson Ville, then you can take them to Big Woods and on home from there”. “ I will pick up anyone that gets dropped, and we will likely not do Big Woods to keep the mileage closer to 50 miles vs 55 or 60” GOG went on to explain. “You lost me at Tingen” Capn cried. “I know were we are going” responded “The Love Train” as he too was there to help lead. “Cool you get us to Sharon Harris then I think I know how to proceed from there” Capn was explaining in his effort to take back control.

Leadership is truly a shared and dynamic experience for this group.

(The Rest of this write-up is from the perspective of a Stem. Below TITLED from a Thorn is the write up of the same ride from the perspective of a Thorn)

That was the last time the two groups interacted as the Thorns exploded down North Salem with the Green Flash taking the first Prelim at the Apex city limits. The Stems settled into a very comfortable pace line as they rolled onto Tingen and its fast run towards Friendship.
GOG was in the pull position working hard to hold the pace at a consistent 26 miles per hour and checking his mirror to make sure all were in tow. Each time he looked in his mirror he could see Mother Goose riding comfortable on his rear wheel. In further review GOG realized that Mother Goose was riding so relaxed that she was able to breath only thru her nose. GOG was gulping air thru his mouth in an effort to catch all the Oxygen molecules he could. He looked much like a Giant Blue Whale as it opens its mouth to consume plankton, while Mother Goose was breathing though her nose with the same level of effort it takes to read a book in a recliner.
This picture haunted GOG as he continued to struggle while Mother Goose continued to ride very relaxed. To make matters worse GOG then remembered that Patti Melt was in the pace line and that she had ridden very successfully with the Thorns the weekend before completing over 50 miles at an 18 mph pace. In checking his mirror he saw she to was riding relaxed in the pace line. Then to make matters worse GOG realized that Two Saddles and Mother Theresa were both in the back of the pace line carrying on some discussion about where they had lived and all the animals that they have had through there life. “GOG” was the only one who was suffering, breathing hard, and already soaked from sweating. Then to make matters worse the Stems headed in to the rolling hills near the end of Tingen. Making matters worse yet, Mother Goose, and Patti Melt both charged past GOG on the uphills as if to say “When do we start this ride?”. And To make matters worse they both were still breathing through their noses, not needing to gulp the air like the big Blue Wale they were passing.

At the end of Tingen the group paused for a moment as GOG struggled to open up the package of Shot Block that he brought on the ride. Patti Melt and Two Saddles both also had Shot Block and had not trouble opening their packs. GOG used his teeth to try and open the package and still struggled to open the package. He tugged and tugged at the plastic with little success. “You want some help” asked Patti Melt. “How did you get yours open so easy” was the cry from GOG. “You cut them open at home before you leave” was Two Saddles sharp response. With that Two Saddles handed GOG her bike as she headed into the woods for a bio break. Now GOG was holding a bike while still struggling for a simple cube of Shot Block. The anticipation of that gummy bear like morsel of caffeine and energy was making him tremble. Finally success as he popped not one but two of those cherry flavored gummy bear cubes into his mouth. He then worked to gnaw on them in between his attempts to suck in oxygen as he was still trying to recover.

Left turn onto Friendship and the Stems again fell into an unorganized pack. No real draft line formed as each rider was more interested in chit chat than drafting. This continued to the bridge and the short steep climb past it. Kevin was in the lead position having coasted fast down hill and passing over the bridge first. As the climb on the other side unfolded he pushed against the peddles in his attempt to not loose speed that had been gained on the downhill. With two thirds of the hill completed he was passed by Mother Goose as she easily slipped past still breathing through her nose, and yes Kevin was gulping for air as she strolled on past.

The group did not hesitate at the next turns onto New Hill Holliman and the next right turn just prior to Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant. It was here that the stems turned up the volume and increased their speed as they rolled into the long gradual up hill that covers the entire length of Shearon Harris Road. GOG set the pace with the hope that the others would accept the challenge of increased speed while climbing the hill. 18 mph became 19 then 20 then 21 slowly pushing to 23 before drifting back to 21 mph. A great job by the stems as all fell in line and responded to the challenge. At one point GOG was afraid that Mother Goose was going to roll on past him again in her effortless style of riding.

The pace settled down once the hill was behind the group. The pack was seen zooming along towards Old Highway One at a comfortable 19 mph pace. This pace actually increased once they made the turn onto Old Highway One and its rolling hills. Mother Goose and Patti Melt took control of the pace line and stepped up the speed to 21 mph as they made their way to the turn in Bonsal. The only recovery time they allowed for was the slow down as the group navigated the train tracks across the road and onto Beaver Dam Road. Once across the tracks the group fell back into the 21 mph pace mode and maintained close to that the entire run down Beaver Dam to the rest stop at Wilson Ville.

As the group slid into the gas station they realized that the Thorns had not waited. Probably a good thing since the Thorns are not usually interested in waiting for any length of time. GOG was ready to stop and as he climbed off his bike realized he was on the verge of a BONK. More Shot Blocks and more water were in demand. GOG bought a large water for everyone to top off their water bottles. He then bent over at the waist to help reduce the dizziness he was feeling. After this he wiped his face using a rag that Mother Theresa carries to blow her nose. “Just use this area here and you should be OK” was the advice provided to GOG. GOG was dripping wet and preceded to ring out is gloves. Unfortunately Nicole was not there to be grossed out again. The group had covered 35 miles at an average pace of 17.8 mph to this point in the ride.

Kevin was now working to determine the best route back and was playing all the options in his head. Does he shorten and flatten the route towards home or does he continue to present hills, or does he lengthen the route, or does he do both.
The Stems all seemed like they were doing very well at that point in the ride. SO More Hills and More Miles it is.

The group reassembled as they waited at the slow light to cross Highway 64. Lots of other biking groups were out and riding in all directions. One of those groups was the Hurricane bike club that rides out of CSH on Saturdays. They pulled up behind the Stems and made the jump thru the light at the same time. The Stems fell in line behind the Hurricanes and drafted them all the way to Horton Pond. The Hurricanes continued on straight towards Lystra while the Stems made the right turn onto Horton Pond and its rough surfaced road and rolling hills. The Stems continued to ride strong and took no time at all to cover the distance. Mother Goose did drop off the back for a brief moment to adjust her tire pump, which had somehow rotated into her crank arm. Once she had corrected the situation she took no time at all to race back to the group. At the end of Horton Pond the group was directed to make the right turn onto Green Level and were informed to also make the next left onto White Oak Church road. More hills more miles.
It was on While Oak Church that the group began to splinter slightly with Mother Goose and Two Saddles electing to fall off the pace slightly. No stopping or resting as the pack turned at the end of White Oak Church onto Luther Shop headed towards home. Luther Shop was used to pull the pack back together, however Mother Goose and Two Saddles had rolled on ahead and just about missed the next turn onto Yates Store. Again GOG had made the decision to add more hills and more miles.
The group was now headed into Cary Glenn and “Nicole’s Roller Coaster”.
The pace and the pack both disintegrated on the other side of Cary Glenn.
GOG had ridden on ahead and was waiting for the group to reassemble at Carpenter Fire Station. This took a long time but once the riders were insight Kevin rolled thru the right turn and slowly peddled assuming others would follow. As he looked in his mirror he could see the others stalled at the intersection with little movement. So GOG slowed even more in an effort to suggest they close the gap. One by one the trailing bikers began their push down Carpenter Fire Station. First to catch GOG was Mother Theresa. “Deb is in trouble, She has a terrible Head Ache” Theresa informed Kevin. “Does she need to rest in some shade or have one of us go get a car for her” was GOGs reply. “Not sure, she has a cell phone and may call her husband” Theresa went on to explain.
GOG slowed even more to allow for a one on one contact with Two Saddles. Mother Goose and Patti Melt rolled past to join Mother Theresa up ahead. “Never had a Head Ache bring tears to my eyes before” Two Saddles told GOG. “have not drunk enough water” she went on to explain. “I need to stop sometime and call my husband to let him know I will be late, needed to be back by 10:45” . “I am sorry I did not know of a time constraint or I could have shortened the ride” GOG said apologetically.

RATS I failed to ask that important question before the ride start GOG thought to himself.

Now the Stems were split with GOG and Two Saddles working together as a team to finish the ride as smoothly and comfortably as possible. The two Mothers and one Melt all continued to blast on to the finish knowing GOG was with Two Saddles and would do what ever was needed to get them both home as directly and safely as possible.

The Stems ended up riding 51 miles at 16 mph pace.
The Thorns rode 61 miles at an 18 mph pace
The Roses rode 30 ish miles at some pace – they do not care about distance or speed. They ride to enjoy the company of others, to get in some exercise, burn some calories, and have fun.

Something for everyone.

Saturdays ride from the perspective of a Thorn
Write up provided by Capn Carbon

Good group of strong riders showed up to see the GOG and Theresa blow up. The State clan (Mean Green Shawn and James - Nicoles "friend" were proudly led by Nicole. Also there was Jeff (claim jumper, not #6, not downhill racer, and not with the broken collar bone) who proclaimed he was going to compete in a swim race tomorrow as his excuse in case he got whooped. The Love Train was there and he appeared to be a bit grouchy again but proclaimed he was strong although still a bit over weight. Suzie (love Train called her Suzie Q and I do not think she liked it) and rode a personal best distance and speed - awesome job! Josh (Moving Violation) was in attendance but announced he had to get back early for his girlfriend's (aka The Dish) 21st birthday. Slow Todd joined in route, and finally, David Cole (legendary cycling ICON from NCBC and OMV with bionic calves) joined the group for the first time. The ride was a bit disorganized early on as Kevin (GOG) was tired before leaving the parking lot and he had hoped to keep the Roses, Thorns, and Stems together as long as possible. To everyone's amazement, the GOG ordered the group to Apex and not the greatly anticipated Ron's Pull. Just prior to crossing High House, Slow Todd broke a spoke and could not continue - good thing he was close to home! Capn and the GOG agreed that Slow Todd was not worth wasting any more time on and discarded him: - ).

Everyone finally regrouped at the 64 overpass just before Apex. The route was disclosed by GOG and the Thorns blasted off as if they were itching for a fight. A left on Tingen and then the pace went from 15 to 20 to 25 to 30+. It got fast, real fast. Coming down the hill, David Cole caught Capn playing games with the group in an old trick to wear them out before the big hill just down the road. It worked as Capn was able to blast to the top of the following hill first closely followed by Shawn and everyone else. GOG owes Capn $100. The Thorns then turned left onto Friendship and blasted off toward Harris with a strong pace line. Josh and Shawn had several surprise attacks on the rolling hills which kept things very interesting and fast. Shawn was arrogant and rode strong all day - nice! Then Nicole lost a water bottle which almost took out The Love Train. Both riders stopped and Capn had to go back to see what happened. Love Train asked why nobody was worried and checked on them and then Capn simply said he went back to get the incident documented in the blog, not because he cared. Tim chuckled and figured such. Then more paceline work at 20+ mph with Capn pushing each lead rider to pick up the pace. By the time the group got to Wilsonville, they were ready for a rest! After a quick break, Josh declared he needed to head back (The Dish needed attention and he was looking for "man points") and Nicole, and James decided to join him and bail out to shorten the ride. Suzie was concerned about the pace and Capn assured her she would not be dropped (haha but true). Then the CSH group came to a stop at the light and the group agreed to join them (after seeing Dwain McBee) as they headed to Big Woods. Capn made a judgment error as he did not realize they were not taking a left and crossing the lake but rather taking a different route than Capn had planned. Half way through the intersection, Capn gave the order to the Thorns to pull out and go left. This got ugly as the light changed and a truck almost got into a few of the Thorns - whoops - sorry!!!!! The group did make it through alive and then proceeded across the lake before turning right onto Big Woods. As usual, the pace quickened on Big Woods and a time trial was on. Capn dropped back to Suzie to let her know what was about to happen and promised to wait at the next intersection. Then as if a fuse was lit, Love Train, Shawn, David, Jeff, and Capn ignited and the speed quickly climbed with each taking a strong pull. In the end, Shawn demonstrated strength and youth by beating everyone to the top of the last hill - GOG owes Shawn $100. Another regrouping and everyone eased up to the Lystra gas station for a final quick break. Then down the hill, over the lake, and a left up some woman's Chapel road. It was here that Suzie got into her aero bars and hammered up the long hill with everyone trying to keep up. At this point, Capn discovered that he had broken something on his flaming red bike's headset as it was making all kinds of noises and popping sounds. Then the County Line approached and everyone knew $100 was on the line. Jeff suggested a group sprint without standing up to make it fair for Capn who was afraid of his bike exploding every time he stood. Then Shawn, Jeff, and Capn sprinted for the line with Capn narrowly getting the win despite his bike moaning the whole way. GOG owes Capn $100. The group pedaled through the 3 Ugly Sisters and then came home down Capn's Graveyard. As with prior weeks, Capn was not able to drop anyone and struggled to hold the pace. Word on the road is that the name "Capn's Graveyard" will be removed if Capn cannot sustain a blistering pace no longer. The group than finished at Bruggers with a total of 60 miles at an 18.6 mph average. As mentioned earlier, this was a Personal Best miles and pace for Suzie!!!!! David Cole was a key factor in the faster than normal pace and said he enjoyed our ride format (attack, recover, then regroup). Jeff and The Love Train rode strong but controlled as they had other plans for the weekend - whatever!

Sunday August 30th.
In attendance:
Waiting in Brueggers for the group was Jeffery Roussel (Down Hill Racer). It was great to see him since his crash and broken collarbone, that is still in the process of healing. Jeffery informed the group that he is loosing weight in the form of muscle mass and will have a long slow recovery. When he is ready we will design rides to help him get back in shape and up to speed. Miss him on the rides as he was one of those would support the SPIRIT of the rides and would work to help others along the way. Get well soon my friend.

Others joining included:
Theresa Smit – Mother Theresa
Kevin Smit – GOG
Steve Cope – Capn Carbon
Brian Farkas – Now with a nickname
Taylor Wolford – Doc
Todd Pechner – Slow Todd
Jae Brainard – still on her new bike
Pat Ryan Hunt – on her new bike.
Steve Sparano – Sporadic Steve – back from Scout Master Training.

As the group slowly arrived Brian Farkas told the group he had come today just to watch Kevin and Theresa suffer from their long time off the bikes. Then Brian reached over and rubbed GOG’s belly. “I had to do that”, “They say rubbing a BUDDA BELLY brings good Luck”.
Brian was already into the SPIRIT of the ride by dishing out the trash talk early.
The group said goodbye to Down Hill Racer as they headed out to the parking lot.
Once in the parking lot everyone began the process of readying themselves and their bikes.

Slow Todd was there riding on a loaner rear wheel from the shop as they are now trying to replace the broken spoke he had on Saturday’s ride.
GOG was there with his Fixed Gear Bike and was apprehensive as to how he and it would handle the pace the hills and the draft line.
Mother Theresa and Jae Brainard were there also concerned about their ability to keep with the Thorns and Stems. GOG was totally confident that those two would be able to hang the whole way.
Capn Carbon was there on his Creaky Carbon Fiber bike. He had pulled the head set apart after Saturdays ride to try and determine the cause of the loud Crunching and Creaking noise when he stood on the peddles and would throw the bike from side to side in his many sprints of the earlier day’s ride. He had discovered that one of the parts (the cone) had cracked so he turned it slightly in place to a position he felt would not stress the crack and then put it back together. DO YOU WANT THIS MAN WORKING ON YOUR BIKE? This is what is considered a road side repair job not a finished product. Lets hope he finds the time to complete the repair before he and his bike go in opposite directions on one of the next rides.

The pack took off out of the parking lot and onto High House with little effort. All rode well together thru the Preston Neighborhood and onto the round about on the other side.

GOG needed to flatten the ride as much as possible for his survival on the fixed gear bike. The gear ratio is 48/16 which feels like riding in the big chain ring and then somewhere in the middle cogs of the rear cluster. So every start would require him to stand on the pedals just to get momentum. Every hill required him to stand its entire length. UPCHUCK was out of the question for the days ride as he is not sure how to replace kneecaps that would explode from the effort. The fixed gear bike also requires a tentative approach to all down hills, as there is no coasting on a fixed gear bike. This means GOG would have to resist the peddles to slow the bike as the crest of the down hill and then continue to resist as best he could until finally letting gravity take full control. On the down hills once he abdicates to gravity his spin cadence would reach close to 130 rpms, bouncing him in the saddle. This would also keep his heart rate high not providing for any recovery before the effort on the other side to make the climb up from the trough of the hill. On the flat sections he could draft others but had to constantly press and then resist the pedals to hold his position without overlapping the rear wheel in front of him. This was a totally new riding experience for GOG, one that took far more concentration than normal. GOG would have to anticipate much further ahead than normal and use his legs to react to any change in speed and to take all bumps without standing and coasting.

The route that GOG designed turned from Preston off of Lewis Stevens Left onto Carpenter Upchurch. The route then turned right onto High House and continued straight on High House across 55 where it changes its name from High House to Green Level. Kevin then guided the group into the neighborhood that would exit them on the other side onto Green Hope High School Road. Prior to this he had told Theresa and Jae how the route would unfold so they would not get lost if they fell off the pace. Jae know exactly the route and confirmed that by telling Kevin that it was also the way the Cup and Cone ride went.
The pack followed GOG onto the right turn on Glenmore road and its multiple short hills through the neighborhood and out the other side on Sear Farm Road. All were still in the group as they made the left onto Green Hope High School road. The draft line worked smoothly pulling all riders along all the way to the end of the road and the right turn onto Green Level Church Road. The pack scattered here to avoid the many potholes infesting that section of Green Level Church Road.

Up ahead there was new construction and the need to jog right onto Green level to Durham Road and then a quick left back onto Green Level Church. As the group approached this known detour they noticed the Road Closed blockage was missing. Only one person trusted that the missing blockage meant it was ok to stay straight. Sporadic Steve was the lone explorer to see if he could short cut the detour. As the pack worked their way through the detour all were looking for Sporadic Steve to POP out ahead of them. Then from the back of the pack came Sporadic Steve. The road is not open yet even though the blockage is no longer in place.
Everyone settled into a comfortable pace anticipating the jump for the county line that lay about 2 or 3 miles ahead. Capn Carbon and Brain were in the middle of the pack slowly setting themselves up to launch their attacks. GOG was riding near the rear of the pace line as he was still trying to work out how to draft safely on a fixed gear bike. He to was thinking about joining in on the county line sprint. Slowly GOG rolled through the pace line to keep a watchful eye on both Brian and Capn Carbon. He knew they would not announce the attack and would in fact be focused on each other allowing GOG to sneak into the jump if he timed it properly.

It was Brian that launched the attack, and he did it from a ¼ mile out. This would be a tough sprint for GOG if he were to participate. His cadence was already very high and he had no extra gears to jump to. What the heck, he threw himself into the mix knowing he would quickly be spun out and then it would be a matter of how long he could hold that just to make the county line. Up ahead Brain was still in the lead and using all the tactics of a sprinter to keep Capn Carbon from being able to draft or pass him. Brain was seen darting from lane to lane and throwing his bike and his body from side to side in an attempt to block the road as well as add additional power to the pedals. Capn Carbon was seen trying to match each move. This scene was much like a World War I dog fight between Manfred von Richthofen (learn more about the Reb Baron) http://www.acepilots.com/wwi/ger_richthofen.html
the Red Baron and any of the 80 others he claimed victory over.

GOG was close behind but had no hope of matching the speed and talent of the two entangled in the dog fight just ahead of him. Then as if the bell rang for two fighters in the ring the action stopped and the riders sat up gliding to a reduced speed. Both congratulated each other on a great dog fight. “you owe Brian a $100 bucks” Capn was heard telling GOG.

The pace line formed once again as all were working together to complete the run towards the Strawberry patch and the next turn.

Once onto Martha’s Chapel the pace line formed into two groups with Capn Carbon, Brain, Pat Ryan Hunt, Todd Pechner, and Sporadic Sporano all charging on at well over 24 mph. The other pace line formed with GOG, Doc, Mother Theresa, and Jae.
GOG owes Brain $100 for taking the Prelim at Lake Jordan, although he declared victory by sitting up and raising his hands in the air just as Capn Carbon was pulling along side with several yards still to go to Lake Jordan.

The group circled several times as they waited on all others to make the end of Martha’s Chapel and to take a brief rest. GOG then made the left turn onto Farrrington Road and the section now known as Claim Jumper Alley (aka previously known as Kevin’s Crawl).

The respect shown to GOG on this section of road was amazing. Here he is no long the owner of this section of road on a fixed gear bike doing his very best to climb in a gear that made every muscle fiber scream at him, and no one even considered overlapping his rear wheel. This was probably the slowest GOG had every traversed this section of Road and ALL RIDERS lined up single file behind him. No attacks, no verbal attacks, just total reverence. WOW it was heart warming. GOG was GLAD that CLAIM JUMPER was NOT on the ride this day.

The pack made the left turn onto Holland Chapel and the pace stiffened once again. This time it was Sporadic Sparano and Pat Ryan Hunt pushing the pace. The group splintered with all strung out along the path creating a situation at the end to the road that put several riders onto 751 and then the turn onto Luter Shop only to slow to a crawl to allow others to come into view.

Once reassembled the pack fell in line behind GOG and Capn Carbon who were riding in the lead positions with them occasionally riding side by side and then alternating who was in the pull postition. With the County line looming in the near distance both Capn and GOG had the same idea. Gradually Slow down to see how the pack reacts and who jumps. Capn even took it further by whispering to GOG that he was not going to participate in the attack. “Lets See who jumps and how they react to me not chasing”
The pace slowed and then slowed again with both GOG and Capn giggling under their breaths. As the county line came in sight Todd Pechner and Brain both rolled past the leaders, scrambling behind them was Sporadic Steve and Pat Ryan Hunt. It was another victory for the RED BARRON as he destroyed all those who attempted to dogfight with him. GOG owes Brian another $100 for the county line Prem.
The group made the right turn into Cary Glenn in anticipation of the rendezvous with CSH. GOG had shortened the ride by a couple of miles and did not expect to intercept CSH until much closer to Cary. The rides continued through Cary Glenn and “Nicole’s Roller Coaster”. They made the run down the full length of Carpenter Fire Station and onto “Capn’s Grave Yard” and still no CSH. Capn was holding back and did not work to drop the pack as he led the group the entire length of “Capn’s Grave Yard”. It was not until the turn onto Lewis Stevens before Capn and Slow Todd were allowed the ability to abandon the Thorns and Roses to jump in with CSH as they headed out of town towards Lake Jordan.

Now down two riders the Thorns and Roses finished their ride through the backside of Preston and onto Cary Parkway and the entrance to the Parking lot behind Brueggers.
The group completed 35 miles at 17.8 miles per hour average. A strong ride for Mother Theresa and Jae.
After the ride Taylor (DOC) stopped Kevin and Theresa in the parking lot to explain what it was like with them gone for several weeks.
“You know it just wasn’t the same with your guys gone”………… “the rides were much Faster with you gone”.
There was a very long pause as Kevin analyzed the comment.
“Thanks, I Think” was all he could respond.

Tim was a Bit#h

(write-up provided by Capn Carbon)

Saturday August 15, 2009

The weather very humid but not too hotA little bit of a late start (7:40) which frustrated atomic clock Ron
Those in attendance included.Starting with the Roses:
Jae - AWOL last Sunday
Christy Wing – rides like she has wings
Ron and Tracy on the tandem - caused confusion on “Ron’s Pull”
Teresa – who is she? – another no-show
Starting with the Thorns:
Steve – “Capn Carbon”Tim – “Love Train with a Migraine” - hey, it rhymes!
Josh – “Moving Violation” , “ohh, I can’t ride hard because I am racing tomorrow”
Jeff – “Claim Jumper”, not #6, not downhill racer, not the one with a broken collar bone
Christi – “Pink Triassholete” – on her gold plated tri-bike which at least makes her look fast
Joe – “hey wait until I get my new bike”
John – “hey most people only live once, but I am living twice!”
Deborah – retired recently to concentrate on biking, running, and swimming – we all are jealous!
Taylor – “Doc” – who rode with so much force that she broke something in her bottom bracket
Kevin – “GOG” – quickly becoming a distant memory and another no-show

This will be a brief write-up as Capn has no time to do the GOG’s responsibility.

The group rolled out of the parking lot late and you could sense the frustration by several of the riders, especially Ron who is definitely time driven and prompt! Off they went with lots of banter from the beginning. The Love Train proclaimed he had a migraine which nobody believed. The more the day went on, the more we believed him. He was unusually quiet and when he spoke it was very negative and with sharp tones. He was bitching all day long.

At Ron’s pull, Ron and Tracy took control and charged down the road. The Thorns were not sure how long, if at all, they had to “respect” Ron since he was not riding solo. It did not matter because Ron and Tracy put the hammer down the entire length of Ron’s Pull and everyone else had to push it to keep up. At the very end, Josh sensed a $100 payout by the GOG and used his youthful sprinting skills to take the prize. GOG owes Josh $100. He caught a lot of dirty looks from the group for not properly respecting Ron and Tracy.

From there, the Roses and Thorns split with Jae leading her group toward Durham and Capn headed toward Upchuck. At Upchuck, the group was nervous in anticipation of a dog fight when suddenly Frank broke loose with a serious explosion to take the king of the mountain honors – GOG owes Frank $100.

The group then took a few turns and a left onto some lady’s Chapel road toward the lake. As expected, the pace quickened and a tight draft line formed. Everyone knew there was another $100 on the line for the first person to the lake. Apparently, the group all used hand signals to form a plan to strand Capn at the point position for the entire stretch. Nobody would pull through and Capn was stuck “breaking wind” for several miles. With the lake coming into sight, Josh sling shot past Capn to claim the win. GOG owes Josh $100. Joe took home second prize with a demonstration of power. Where was Capn – out of gas from breaking all the wind!

A right turn put the group at the Lystra gas station for a needed break. Man was it humid! During the break, Joe proclaimed that he was taking his game to another level by ordering a full carbon race bike from Bikes Direct. The bike is called Immortal Force which I suspect does not come in “Pink”. Check it out : http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/immortalforce_10.htm .

After the break, the group formed a good pace line and rolled forward with a bunch of right turns (one on Stage Coach I think) which circled the group back toward Cary. During one long uphill stretch, Capn “lit it up” a little with Frank hot on his heels. A few riders back was Christi (Pink Triassholete) on her fancy high dollar pro tri bike. With all of that technology under her butt, she started letting the group behind her get gapped. Then it happened. Josh barked at Christi to close the gap (in London they say “Mind the Gap”) which really irritated her. At that point, Christi responded with words that cannot be written in this blog. I think the two kissed and made up later in the ride. Was good entertainment for the group which filled in the void left by Love Train’s lack of talking and joking around.

The group splintered a bit from there until after crossing 55 and the tracks. Everyone regrouped at the beginning of Capn’s Graveyard. Everyone was ready for what was going to happen next. Capn slowly took the pace up to 25-27 mph and a tight line formed right behind him. Lots of complaints about not being able to draft off of a Nat where heard as the wind was rushing through everyone’s helmets. Capn could not shake the group and even heard comments from Jeff (not #6, etc.) that the pace was unusually slow this time. Apparently our rides are not pushing Jeff enough or MAYBE he should try the pull position more to wear himself down like the rest of the ride group. Frank did not even break a sweat and continues to wonder when the attacks will get serious. Joe rode like a pro and kept saying “just wait until I get my Immortal Force”. Taylor “Doc” rode extremely strong all day long and definitely has picked up her game. In fact, it was learned after the ride that she rode with such power that she broke something in her bike’s bottom bracket. She drove directly to Performance Bike to make the repair after the ride. Josh rode well but overall was sucking a lot of wheel to save his strength for a race on Sunday. Deborah rode strong all day long but faded a little in the end as the pace quickened. She is in no rush as she is RETIRED. At one point, Deborah pulled up next to Capn and asked how many times a week he rides? She wanted to know how to ride faster. Capn simply responded that anyone can ride faster through modern chemistry and quickly recommended EPO, blood doping, Roids, and other supplements

It was a great 40 mile ride at 18.2 mph. With GOG gone, the group is beginning to take it to another level. BUT, we continue to make this a “NO DROP” ride.

Thorns getting gnarly

This post was provided by Steve Cope “Capn Carbon”

Saturday August 8th:

Good size group (20 maybe) but don't ask Capn for names.
Everyone knows he cannot recall people's names and especially road names. GOG typically sits in Bruggers with his little notebook and jots down everyone's name as they pour into the parking lot. The group has grown too large for his feeble memory. Capn did not have time to jot down names as his focus was clearly on caffeine loading and getting jacked up for the ride.

Most of the usuals were not present in an apparent protest to the lack of GOG presence lately. Does anyone know where he is or even remember him? Thankfully Jae was there to lead the Roses. She is very responsible and can be counted on in times of need.

Theresa, Teresa, Tesa, or whatever her name is was a no show once again (like GOG) and will surely lose her Roses queen title.

The NC State boys were there flashing lots of red and white. Shawn was there on his mean green machine and flashed some really cute red ladies slippers (he says mens carbon shoes) that clearly made a statement. Shawn also earned the most aggressive rider of the day jersey.

The ride started off with a major acceleration on Ron's Pull which dropped off a few Roses and this led to the first field split by dropping the Roses to Jae's leadership. The Thorns crossed 55 and then at some Fire station or Carpenter something or another road, jacked a right and thankfully avoided Upchuck hill. The pace then got fast and clearly was not "in the spirit" that the GOG typically expects. It was declared the "new spirit" and everyone rejoiced not having to wait for the GOG and hear his ranting and raving about the group going too fast.

Then, the group went left, right, left, left, left (I think) and somehow ended up at the Lystra gas station. Capn had no clue where he was or how he got to the gas station but his bike did and led the way. Thanks mostly to Shawna, Jeff (not #6 who is in a sling), and new guy Frank (OMV veteran and X-racer), the pace was fast and full of time trial like outbursts. At the gas station, some folks whimped out (led by Josh who said he needed to race on Sunday and go easy) and rolled home via some church road.
The rest of the group led by Carrie and Don, Love Train, Jeff (the Jeff that did not crash last week), the State boys, Frank, and Capn (who did I foget?) rolled toward Cul-de-Lystra.

Just prior to the climb, several of Josh's ITS race teammates went blasting past the Thorns well organized pace line. Jeff yelled out to Capn to not let them go without a fight! At this point, Shawna was already on a mini-breakaway of his own and the 2 ITS racers went blasting past him as well. Capn jumped on the big chain ring to join Shawna and they easily caught the 2 racers just at the bottom of the climb.

Then, Capn and Shawna pulled up next to the 2 racers and said have a great day with a grin on their face. Then the 2 arrogant bastar#$ (Capn and Shawna) put the hammer down, easily dropped the 2 surprised racers, and breezed to the top of the mountain. The rest of the Thorns easily climbed to the top and the proud group blasted on. The group hooked a left and then another left down Jack Bennett. Everyone was feeling great so the group decided to hit Big Woods and around the lake. It was during the ride across Big Woods that the group started to separate with everyone wanting to get as far away from the Love Train as possible. Capn did not ride the prior Saturday and was not sure what was going on : - )

The group stopped at Wilsonville for a quick break and then blasted home on some roads that Capn could not recall. After heading through the 3 ugly sisters, Don and Carrie started to feel the speed and miles. They backed off the pace and Capn dropped back to guide them in as they were not very familiar with the way home.

The front group saw the opportunity and attacked! Once Capn got Don and Carrie onto Capn's Graveyard, the directions were easy to convey and he was released. At that point, Capn saw the lead group way out in the distance and launched a furious attack to catch them. The front group organized a pace line and were too strong to be caught - well done.

Bottom line: Josh led the "stems" back home at with just under 40 miles. The Thorns did 57 miles at a new speed record of 19.2 mph. The pace must have been due to Frank as he was the only new rider. Carrie and Don broke personal records for both miles in a single ride plus their 18+ mph average was amazing‼

Sunday August 9th:
No GOG, no Teresa - yee haa.
No list of names will be provided due to short term memory loss by Capn!
A fairly small group formed in the parking lot but a good mix of riders and skills. Brian blessed us with an appearance and was flashing a new (old) rear wheel that he picked up for $30. Some of you might recall his prior 28 year old wheel used to wobble several inches left and right as well as up and down.
Another surprise was John Majikes in the parking lot full of stories and energy as usual. Then Barb arrived to ride with the Roses. Barb is a friend of Capn and was promised that there would be a Roses group which fit her riding style more than the Thorns. Only problem was that no Roses showed up - Jae, where were you! Capn told Barb to not worry and that this was a "no drop" group and she would be fine - haha.

The group rolled out of the parking lot and did the typical chit chat when all of a sudden, Dwight declared he had a flat just prior to Ron's Pull. Majikes had a great idea for him to round up all of the ladies (nobody ever said he was stupid) and get a head start with them while Jeff, Brian, Slow Tim, and Capn stayed to help Dwight get back on the road. The group agreed to meet at the top of Upchuck and off went the ladies (and John). After fixing the flat, the chase group formed a solid pace line and raced down the road at break neck speed in an attempt to catch the breakaway. The ladies (and John) were too fast and stayed away all the way to the top of Upchuck - awesome job‼ Capn was able to hold off Brian for a rare win against him to the top of Upchuck. GOG owes Capn $100.

From there, the group blasted down the road, took a left and then right to end up at the strawberry patch. The group was still very strong and Barb was riding like a pro despite her saying she was a Rose prior to the ride. As expected, there was a massive acceleration down some Chapel road toward the lake. Brian, riding on his new wheel, easily broke away from the peleton and held off a charging Slow Tim, Jeff, and Capn for the $100 prime at the lake. GOG owes Brian $100.

At the lake, the ladies group all wanted more miles and convinced their new leader John to take them up the road towards the Lystra gas station and then who knows where. The others, went up Kevin's Crawl and then headed for the CSH ride group. Believe it or not, Jeff (not the one that crashed last week) demonstrated extreme respect for the GOG by not attacking up Kevin's Crawl. He continues to deny being a Claim Jumper as GOG contends in prior write-ups. Anyway, the group breezed past the county line, through the 3 ugly sisters and then ran into the CSH group just prior to hitting 55. Jeff (Claim Jumper) and Capn turned around and joined the CSH group for another 30-ish miles.

It was a very hot day but a great day for riding. In the end, John and all of his girls completed 40 miles which was outstanding. Barb was very tired but excited to ride that far and at that pace as she rode 30+ miles the day before. Great riding by everyone today.

After very brief introductions the group rolled out of the parking lot with the “Thorns and Roses” separated before entering High House.

Kevin and Theresa were both expecting an ugly ride for them as they had been off the bike for the last couple of weeks with the most resent one being filled with crab eating and beer drinking rather than biking.

The pace of the Thorns was relatively controlled as “Capn Carbon” was busy chit chatting with others. The usual suspects to prompt attacks were not in attendance. Kevin was already sensing that his legs were soon ready to argue with him as the pack rolled across Davis drive and into the roundabout prior to exiting the Preston neighborhoods.

Kevin was near the back of the pack as the group closed in on the turn that would take them onto “Ron’s Pul”l or back into the Cary Neighborhoods. The ride leader at that point was “Mr. Bridenbaugh”. With full confidence he signaled left turn. The entire pack all looked around to see where “GOG” was and if he was in full agreement with the directive from “Mr. Bridenbaugh”. “GOG” did not confirm nor deny the directive. A short hesitation from the pack allowed those in the rear with “GOG” to catch the pack and as “GOG” followed the command provided from “Mr. Bridenbaugh” the pack once again turned their focus on the road and those ahead of them.

“GOG” had shared with a handful of folks prior to the ride what he was planning for the day’s ride. He selected a few individuals who he felt would likely be the ride leaders of the “Thorns”, and those who splinter from the group forming the “Stems”. These individuals would respond with attacks and would also appreciate the concept of a no drop style ride. This way they can attack for long periods knowing where the route would lead, and then would also slow long enough to recover and bring the pack back together. Those who get splintered would have the confidence of knowing that someone in that group also knows the route, and they would likely see the “Thorns” soon enough in the distance circling to make sure all are safe and trouble free. “GOG” always singles out “Capn Carbon” as the one person he confides in regarding the day’s route. He does this knowing “Capn Carbon” will be in every breakaway/ attack, and “Capn Carbon” has demonstrated time and time again that he will stop to help any and all riders as needed. “GOG” also knows that even when “Capn Carbon” has been told the route, he will likely miss a turn or two, which adds great fun to the ride.

The pack was now traversing the quick right and then left off of High House and onto Jenks Carpenter and the first hill attack of the day. “I had a great first Triathlon”, “It was fun and I look forward to doing more”, “ I want to get better on the bike though”, “How do I get faster on the bike”, “I averaged 18 mph, and others were going by me as if I was standing Still” Don Zelna was excitedly describing his most recent personal experience to “GOG”. “You need to ride more like Capn Carbon – attack and recover” was the brief explanation to Don. “You mean scorch or Cope-ing” was Don’s response indicating he had read the most resent email banter and also understood the concept of how to do speed work on a bike.

“You need to attack on each hill and respond to each county line sprint” “GOG” went on to drive his point home. “Be ready because at the bottom of this hill is the first attack of the day, it is about being in the best gear and jump while your rpms are still high” he went on to explain.

If only “GOG” could follow his own coaching advice.

By this time the pack was already zooming downhill and had only a few yards to go before the base of the climb. “GOG” and Don were now in the last two spots in the draft line. “GOG” shifted up two more gears putting him in some of the highest gears he can push. On those last few feet of downhill momentum “GOG” decided to see if he could spin the big gears and stay in them for as long as possible.
The pack up ahead was already beginning to splinter with riders pulling out wide to pass those who were holding their line but giving into gravity. “GOG” was in full sprint in a big gear as he rushed past a clump of riders that were all jockeying for positions to get around others as they too were mounting their attack. “NICE MOVE and FROM THE BACK OF THE PACK” was the cry from “Mr. Bridenbaugh” as he was startled to see the old man blow on by. “SHIT – Tee hee Hee” was heard from “Capn Carbon” who until that point was only working hard enough to stay inches ahead of the others.
“GOG” watched in his mirror to see how long he would be allowed to control the lead position on the climb. “GOG” was still spinning the big gears – still no attack from “Capn Carbon”. “Keep spinning, Push the gears, don’t shift down, You are easily half way to the summit” all this was crashing around in “GOG’s” head as he continued to look in his mirror and still no response from “Capn Carbon”.
“Why isn’t he going?” “Keep pushing, spin, don’t shift, don’t falter”, were the thoughts now colliding in “GOG’s” brain. “Closing in on to the Top 1/3 of the climb” “Doing Good” then as if shot by a high powered rifle “GOG” faltered just enough to send the signal back to “Capn Carbon” to launch his delayed attack. “GOG” sensed he had signaled his weakness and quickly glanced in his mirror in hopes that “Capn Carbon” had not noticed. There in his mirror “GOG” could clearly see the excited Cope stand and throw his bike from side to side in total joy. “GOG’s” brain even suggested it could hear the shrill sound of a deranged killers knowing laugh as it was about to complete it’s evilest of deeds.
The gap was truly a large one and would allow for a mortally wounded animal to find a way to escape and hide from its killer. But this was no normal killer this was “Capn Carbon” In less time than it takes to strike a match “Capn Carbon” was gliding alongside the wounded “GOG” smiling in his most deranged way to communicate “nice try”.

And that is being SCORCHED and that is how one improves over time. Attack and recover and attack again. So far “GOG” is able to attempt an attack and then spends the rest of the day’s ride never able to recover. We all have to start somewhere and this is the best to date for “GOG”. Look for him to continue these feeble attempts, if nothing else it allows for great entertainment for “Capn Carbon” much like a ball of catnip can entertain a kitten for some time.

The riders did not wait at the top of the hill as “GOG” looked in his mirror to see most were not far behind as he too was now at the top having been past by more than “Capn Carbon” by then. A right turn put the group onto Holt and towards Highway 55 and points west of there. Taylor was riding next to Kevin as she informed him that there was at least one other behind. She had already informed “Capn Carbon” of this detail and he was already falling off the pace and turning to go back. “Let’s just slow and allow them to catch up – If they are not with us at the light on 55 we will wait there” was the command given by Kevin to the pack.

At highway 55 the group was joined again by “Capn Carbon” and “Slow Tim” who had dropped his chain on the first hill attack of the day. “Slow Tim” was the first to the base of the hill and the last one to climb it.

Roberts road was the next turn, with its long gradual downhill slope, producing high speeds in a well formed draft line. The group leading the pace line included “GOG”, “Capn Carbon”, Paul, Joe Pittman, “Slow Tim”, “Mr. Bridenbaugh”. Close on their heels included – in no specific order: Carrie Zelna, Don Zelna, Taylor, Jen Serino- “slow Jen Fizz”, Erica Mancuso, Jeff, Doug, and Taylor. Everyone was flying down the road at speeds over 24 mph for the entire length of Roberts road. The pace line slowed long enough to make a safe smooth right hand transition onto Green Level Church Road and the stop sign at its intersection with Green Level. Once onto Green Level the group almost reversed its leadership with individuals like “Slow Jen Fizz”, Erica, Doug, Carrie, Joe all pushing the pace up the long steady climb of Green Level to its crest at White Oak Church Road. “GOG” and others were able to hold on and stay in close enough contact to bark orders to stay straight at the top of the hill.

Once over that first climb of Green Level the pack splintered as some elected to race down the other side to set up for another push up the next two hills prior to the turn onto Luther. As the pack rolled over the last climb of Green level several of the leaders had regrouped and were now charging on down the road. That pack included “Capn Carbon”, “Slow Jen Fizz”, Erica, Paul, “Slow Tim”, Carrie Zellna, and “Mr. Bridenbaugh”. “GOG” was working to close the gap along with all the other trailing riders. As the trailing riders continued to push hard the gap did not close and in fact the lead group had begun to mash hard on the pedals. “GOG” expected the lead pack to make the left turn onto Luther, after all he did share the day’s route plan with “Capn Carbon”. The lead group did not slow for the turn and continued to push on past in anticipation of more hills on Green Level. “GOG” dropped his head in disbelief and then smiled to himself realizing this was a great opportunity to provide the lead riders a chance to chase down the trailing riders after they had made the planned turn onto Luther. Without barking out orders to those pulling away “GOG” directed those around him to make the sweeping left turn onto Luther. Normally this is a regroup spot that provides for a short break, however today it was an opportunity for those trailing riders to now be in the lead position.
“NICE” was the comment provided by Joe Pittman as he enjoyed the game just played on “Capn Carbon” and the other riders. It did not take the lead pack long to glance back and notice the tail end of the others making the turn they had just blown by. As the lead pack slowed to determine their next move the trailing riders continued to roll out of site on Luther. “GOG” knew that “Capn Carbon” would jump at the opportunity to chase everyone down and in doing so the other riders with him would act as Lemmings and follow his lead.
The run down Luther was relaxed with the pack scattered along its length. Each rider was working to recover from the 3 hills of Green Level, and were preparing for the one steep hill near the end of Luther. That hill is another great one for attacking even if there is no one to attack other than one’s self. “GOG” was prepared to push himself on that hill and was willing to do so even if there was no target other than the read out on his cateye computer and heart rate monitor. As “GOG” lined up for the attack he slid past two to three other cyclists who were not planning to attack the hill. At that same time “Mr Bridenbaugh” had unlatched himself from the group he was riding with and made his move to dive into the slip stream being generated by “GOG”. The hill is designed well for larger riders as it first presents a nice fast downhill, with no real flat bottom prior to the climb allowing for the heavier riders to build great momentum. With the proper gear choice and timing of when to jump on the pedals to spin the bigger gears these larger riders are able to reduce the effects of gravity that typically plagues them on most hills. “GOG” clicked the gear shifter two times nudging the rear derailleur closer to the smaller chain rings. He was already in the large chain ring up front and did not want to drop to the small chain ring forcing a much higher cadence than he could safely spin. Now it was a balance of proper gear choice, timing of when to spin, leg strength, and ability to survive in the Anaerobic Zone long enough to roll over the top of the climb, Oh yea and not maxing out the heart rate of a near 60 yr old man.
“Mr. Bridenbaugh” was still working to get into the slip stream of “GOG” as the two were now working to defy gravity. The two riders crested the hill together as “Mr. Bridenbaugh” clearly was gaining on “GOG” with each revolution of the crank set.

The pack was not far behind these two Gladiators as they all rolled to the stop sign at the end of Luther. It was at this point that the pack was asked to hold allowing for all to regroup before heading towards the next leg of the days ride route. As each rider was absorbed back into the group it was learned that someone had suffered a flat and “Capn Carbon” was with them helping them make the repairs. The pack now was asked to chill longer than expected to allow for the completion of the tire repair. This is the price one pays for electing to ride with a “NO DROP” style ride. Not everyone enjoys the delay, but the alternative is to someday be out there all alone with no hope of rejoining the group to ride once again in the pace line at 20+ mph. “GOG” could sense the anxiety of a few of the “Thorns” as the delay unfolded. The “Thorns” never really like to stop at all and usually tolerate the one or two short stops to top off water bottles and to take bio-breaks. Knowing that this now is adding yet another stop really was not sitting well with some.

Don Zellna and “Capn Carbon” were seen rolling up to the pack having successfully repaired the flat. In the act of repair “Capn” was able to locate the cause being a piece of hair like steel that likely came from a car or truck steel belted tire tread that had been laying along the edge of the road. “GOG” asked the group to continue to pause allowing for Don and “Capn” to recoup slightly before heading back onto the roads.

The group was then directed to make the right turn onto 751 with the next turn to be left onto Horton Pond and its 3 – 4 miles of rolling hills. No delay as all were tired of waiting and did not want the legs to stiffen from standing around any longer. Everyone made the turn safely on to Horton Pond. The pace immediately began to build. Paul dropped back through the pack to ask “GOG” “are we turning anywhere soon”. “GOG” recognized this to really mean “Can we sprint on ahead and for how far before we have to wait again”. “You can turn it loose all the way to the end of Horton Pond” was the reply from “GOG”. The smile on Paul’s face was all the further communications needed.
With the crack of a whip Paul shot to the front to the line and continued to bolt out into the lead knowing he would insight an attack from “Capn” and the other “Thorns”.
For some who responded with the “Thorns” it was a full on sprint/hill climb for 3 miles, for some it was an attempt to hang with the “Thorns” as long as possible, for some it was a, let’s just get this section of road over with. Horton Pond does not allow for any recovery due to its terrain. There is no real flat section, no good down hills, and the climbs are just long enough to either slow the cadence, or demand a gear change, or require a thigh burn push the gears response from a rider.

“GOG” was one of the last to arrive at the end of Horton Pond and rather than slow to join the awaiting pack he elected to roll through the intersection making a smooth left turn onto Farrington road heading towards Highway 64. As he did this there were a few verbal barbs thrown his way – something about “the Spirit of the Ride” – a flash back to several weeks earlier when he ranted and raved to others who were pushing the pace way too early in a ride.
Joe was the first to jump out of the group and quickly closed the gap allowing him to rest easily in the vortex generated by the girthy “GOG”. Before those two leading riders were a quarter of a mile down the road the entire pack was now enjoying the calm air of the vacuum created by “GOG” being in the front of the pace line. “GOG” was surprised that the “Thorns” allowed him to continue to lay claim to the pull position especially since he was not pulling them along at the blistering pace they normally enjoy. In fact on that section of Farrington road his efforts in the Pull position were only generating 17 mph.

“Lets Stop here at the gas station on Highway 64 to fill water bottles and take a bio break” announced “GOG” as he rolled to a stop in its parking lot. This was the first planed break for the day.

“What time do you usually get back from a ride” asked Erica. “I don’t know maybe around 10:30 or 11” replied “GOG”. “Do you have a time constraint, I forgot to ask at the start if there was anyone needing to get back earlier” he went on to say. Kevin could tell that the pace and delays so far had the group far behind normal. “Yea I do need to get back soon” Erica responded. “I can just turn around here” she said. “You could also follow us to Big Woods and then turn right there and head over to Lystra and then turn for home from there”, “Others may elect to go that way as well rather than do the full planned route”, “I am usually one of those always willing to turn back early” Kevin went on to say. “I can go back with her” offered “slow Jen Fizz”, “Me Too” announced Paul.
“That is great”, “We never want to send a lone rider off from the group” Kevin went on to explain.
“Thanks for helping make sure everyone rides with a buddy” he continued.

So the first major split of the group took place 20 miles into a planned 50+ mile day. To that point there had been one thrown chain, and one flat and now one planned stop. The clock was running faster than the rider’s progress on the ride. “GOG” was actually thankful due to the fact that he had not been on the bike for a couple of weeks and this slower pace was working to his liking. Others however clearly wanted to get on with it. After the brief stop everyone said goodbye and ride safe to Erica, “Fizzy” and Paul as the groups headed in different directions.

The “Thorns” were quick to jump onto Highway 64 to setup a fast pace line in the shoulder section of that road. Jeff, Taylor, Joe, “Mr. Bridenbaugh”, “Slow Tim”, and “Capn Carbon” were seen powering towards Lake Jordan and the planed leftt turn away from Big Woods. Carrie and Don Zelna and Doug were continuing to ride in the slip stream being generated by “GOG” as he did his best to continue the drive at 17 -19 mph. The group came together again at the next turn as the “Thorns” politely waited on the “Stems”. The group was now headed towards North Pea Ridge and away from Big Woods and Highway 64. There was no traffic which was a welcomed relief to the noisy fast heavy traffic of Highway 64. Jeff was riding now very comfortably alongside Kevin and was asked why he was not provoking any of the days attacks on “Capn” and the ride leaders. “Not feeling the best today” was Jeff’s reply. Kevin only wished on his best days if he could ride as strong as Jeff does on Jeff’s off days. After that brief exchange Jeff rejoined the lead riders as they were now chasing down Carrie Zelna who was gliding along comfortably at 19+ mph while climbing a hill and looking at the birds and the trees, and the flowers and thinking to herself what a beautiful day it was. Carrie is a joy to ride with. She is always smiling and if one listens carefully they could swear they could hear her singing quietly to herself some nursery rhyme type songs. Maybe we should nick name her “Mother Goose”. Carries posture on the bike is not what you would expect from a “Triassholete”. Rather than riding in the aerodynamic TriBike configuration she elected to outfit her bike with Upright handle bars. This puts her in a body position that allows for what is typically seen on the greenway style riders on their hybrid bikes. So there is Carrie riding upright at 19+ mph climbing a hill looking at the birds, and flowers, and singing some nursery song to herself. A new breed of “Triassholete”. She may actually inspire others to adopt her riding style and attitude. Imagine the Ironman in Kona with everyone riding a hybrid and singing to themselves and smiling the entire 112mph leg of the bike ride.

The group did not wait long at the turn onto Pea Ridge. Here again “GOG” could sense the need to turn the “Thorns” loose once more. “OK Thorns stay on this all the way to the next stop sign where it crosses back over Highway 64”. Before Kevin was able to finish the sentence the “Thorns” were well down the path towards that next rendezvous. This section of Pea ridge is not flat and not really hilly, but it is a long slow gradual incline all the way to Highway 64. There was a very short pause to regroup before launching the “Thorns” once again to attack each other over and over again all the way to the next turn at 15/501. The “Stems” continued to glide along in the draft of “GOG” as they rode consistently around the 19 mph mark. At one point on this stretch of road a minivan elected to race past the “Stems” just in time to hit the breaks so it could wait on a passing car to move by tothen make a left hand turn. “GOG” could only dart to the right and slip by the Van on the remaining few inches of the shoulder, he had to allow enough space so he did not take out the passenger side mirror. “NICE MOVE” he shouted at the driver of the van. Doug Augustine was far enough behind to successfully slow and wait behind the van. This was the only vehicle incident for the days ride and of course Kevin was the magnet. There seems to be some strange force in the Universe that consistently aligns Assholes in vehicles with the space occupied by Kevin on his bike. Maybe it is just pure physics. Two large bodies of Mass are attracted to each other and Kevin’s Mass can rival most vehicles.

The group was together again at 15/501 long enough for Kevin and “Capn” to agree that the run down Jack Bennett would be the safest route to take to the next rendezvous spot at the gas station on Lystra and Farrington. Again the “Thorns” launched themselves onto the wide shoulder of 15/501 and without looking back finished that run with a sweeping right turn onto the long downhill of Jack Bennett. Taylor announced that she too would jump with the “Thorns” to see how long she can hold on. This spurred all the other “Stems” to join her in that futile attempt.

“GOG” elected to continue his pace setting effort – solo – at 19 mph.
The run down Jack Bennett was relaxing and produced speeds in the mid 30s. As “GOG” rolled towards the bottom of the hill he saw Doug Augustine slow and stop his bike to inspect his rear wheel. “Everything OK” he asked as he rolled past Doug and now Taylor who was also checking on him. “GOG” checked his mirror to see if all were ok. Doug and Taylor were seen pushing off and clipping back into the pedals.

The stop at the Gas Station at Lystra allowed for a quick bio break, and water to be purchased and shared by the group – topping of water bottles for the last 20 mile section leading home.

“Take them thru Nicole’s roller coaster and down Capn’s Grave Yard” instructed “GOG” to “Capn Carbon”. This would be the final time those two riders would see each other until the finish.
Everyone wanted to play “Thorn” resulting in the pack forming quickly behind “Capn’s” wheel as he set the pace out of the gas station and down the road to the turn at Martha’s Chapel. Along those last 20 miles “GOG” was expecting to ride along and pick up all who splinter off the back and revert to being “Stems”. Doug elected to join Kevin from the start as an additional sweep. The two riders were quickly dropped by the pace line long before the bridge across Lake Jordan and the following turn onto Martha Chapel. Now alone on the road the two trailing riders prepared for the turn onto Martha Chapel slowing just enough to time the left turn prior to the car from behind blocking their move and allowing the on coming traffic to pass by safely. “GOG” drifted into the left side of the lane and signaled his intention expecting the trailing car to slow appropriately also allowing Doug to drift into the proper position for the left turn. “GOG” was mid way through the turn when he heard TTTTTTTTDDDDD TTTTTTDDDD TTTTTDDDD. He immediately thought of the sound made by a car drifting out of its lane and onto shoulder rumble strips. “WHAO WHAO WAHO I got a problem” Kevin immediately slowed, turned his head, then made a U turn to see Doug manhandling his bike into the left turn and then stop. The car that had been following slowed only enough to miss Doug by also veering to the right.
There are no rumble strips on the side of the road there. The sound Kevin heard was that of Doug’ s Flat front tire flopping its sidewall against the pavement as Doug attempted to lean the bike into the turn.

Doug pulled off the road not even aware that he had stopped in the middle of a mud puddle. He was still trying to figure out how he managed to keep the bike up through the turn. “You know I thought something was wrong with my bike going down Jack Bennett” , “it was wobbly so I stopped and checked the back tire, and it was OK”, “Then at the Gas Station when I got off my bike I was Wobbly so I figured it was me not a tire” Doug was heard explaining this mostly to himself.

What proceeded next was the worst flat tire repair in the history of bicycling.
First - the steel bead on the tire was so hard to get off that one of the tire wrenches broke in the process
Second - the first replacement tube was pinched – punctured by the tire iron while the two worked together to try and pry the bead back into the rim.
Third – neither rider had the strength to work the hand pump properly to get full pressure into the tire.
Forth – The mud now caked into Doug’s cleats had to be scraped out using pieces of metal debris from the edge of the road.
In the end almost 40 minutes had past.
The two riders had now exceeded the cut off time to complete the tour.
So we now have potential nick names for Doug.

Rumble strip – for the sound his flat tire made during the turn
MR. GoodWrench - for his stellar tire changing ability (he did have help that was no better).
Wobbly – for the description he had explaining how both he and his bike felt

Together they collected all the dead tubes, cardboard boxes they came in, tire irons – good ones and broken ones, valve stem covers, and extra stem nuts, making sure there were no tell tale signs of a road side repair left behind. The two then climbed on their bikes and road casually on down the road towards the end. Just prior to their crossing at Highway 55 Kevin’s phone rang. He let it go to voice mail knowing that he would return the call once at the light. As he placed the call he could hear Theresa in the background picking up the call and informing everyone at her end “Well at least we know they are not DEAD”. “Hello” was then the greeting she supplied to the caller at the other end of the line.
“We are just about to enter” Capn’s Grave yard” was the message relayed back to Theresa. Doug and Kevin finished the ride both having learned that tires with Steel Beads are Not easy to change during a ride.
The “Thorns and Stems” rode 52 miles that day.
Some rode much faster than others.
There was one thrown chain and 3 flats.

Sunday July 19th.
One section of road changes names, one section of road gets a new name.
5 riders get nicknames.

A cool dry day.
The plan was to ride as one group 30 – 35 miles with the group returning along the route that CSH rides as they are headed out of Cary. This would allow for those who want more miles and a stiffer pace to jump into the CSH ride using the “Thorns- Stems-Roses” ride as a warm-up.

Those in attendance
Kevin Smit - “GOG”
Theresa Smit
Steve Cope – “Capn Carbon” riding his old classic bike.
Kristine Pryzgoda – rides once a year with the group just to stay in touch.
Zachery Cope – a true mini me of “Capn Carbon” riding on Capn’s Carbon bike.
Tim Devinney – “The Love Train”
Dani Devinney – “Domestic B” – ask the “Love Train what her full nickname is. She is back on the bike after a long time and rode very strong on this days ride.

Doug Augustine – “Mr. Goodwrench”, or “Rumble Strip”, or “ Wobbly” – we need to vote on which is best suited for Doug. I vote for RUMBLE STRIP. Read Saturdays’ write up to help explain the options. Learn also what section of road is named after Doug from his ride this day.
Sheila Augustine
Patti Lewis – “Patti Melt”.

The days ride began after brief introductions and an explanation of how the ride would unfold for those newer riders to the group.
The pack stayed together early in the ride with the group chit chatting all the way to “Ron’s Pull”. It was here that the ladies took control of the front of the pace line and executed a well orchestrated rotating draft line amongst Sheila, Patti, and Theresa. All others were relegated to no closer than 4th pull position. The rains were passed to others only after the three ladies had perfected their rotating draft line which lasted well into the length of “Ron’s Pull”. The group was next found single file on Carpenter Fire Station Road with several folks taking turns at the pull position. At one point the entire pace line slowed and stopped to allow an ambulance to pass safely by. Jeff was in the lead as the pace line drew close to a potential turn into Cary Glenn. “Straight to the stop sign at Yates Store and the run up UPCHUCK” was the orders given from within the pace line. Several of the new riders had not yet had the joy of climbing UPCHUCK so Kevin elected to expose them to it on the days ride.

The lineup of the attack of the hill unfolded with “The Love Train” playing lead out man, Jeff hot on his heels, Zachary following his Dad, and then the rest allowing for large gaps to form as they were making sure they did not have any issues with the holes in the road on the downhill run. Kevin had warned the new riders to the group of the Hill, how it is known as UPCHUCK, and of the rough roads leading to the base of the hill.

Kevin was behind the leading pack as it was seen racing down hill while he coasted to save any and all energy. Others were scattered behind, each picking their own line for the hill climb. Kevin shifted into large than normal gears to see if he could attack hard at the base and shift if needed/able during the climb. As Kevin reached the bottom of the hill he could see the lead group already splintering on the bottom third of the climb. He elected to wind up the rpms and swing wide left to provide for safe passage and to prevent anyone from jumping on his rear wheel. “Capn Carbon” was in the lead pushing only hard enough to remain in the lead of others in that leading pack. Zachary was seen pushing well into second place as Kevin’s momentum was still working in his favor allowing him to spring past Zachary. Just as Kevin found himself in second place “Capn Carbon” was looking back and laughing at Kevin’s attempt and informing him that Zachary was closing in on him. “I am in the wrong gear” Grunted Kevin as his momentum and rpms drained faster than a beer bong. Fortunately for him Zachary was also in a stiff gear and was struggling alongside him with that same sinking feeling.

Once at the top Kevin and the two Copes circled once before the entire pack was there and making the right turn onto New Hope Church Road. The pace elevated as all riders enjoyed the smooth pavement presented on this section of road. The rolling hills did nothing to slow the pace as each rider found it easier to ride fast on this smooth surface. Kevin was riding in the middle of the pack as they were instructed to remain straight all the way to 751. At 751 Kevin rolled through the stop sign making a left turn onto 751 and the run up the three hills to the turn at Martha’s Chapel. Larry Kaminski was next to follow and he was joined by Ying So and then the others with Dani Devinney pushing the pace keeping those behind her up with the leaders. Larry and Kevin continued to set the pace upfront and made efforts to splinter the pack on each climb. Larry easily matched every attempt Kevin made to raise the pace. Larry looks to be another “Take No Prisoners” Komakasi style rider. Kevin could also still see the solid efforts of Theresa, Patti, Sheila, and Dani as they continued to pull the others along remaining in contact with the lead riders. A solid job of driving the pace line by those ladies. Riding very comfortably with them was Kristine and Brandy both chatting with each other. The Copes were keeping each other company and tucked in with them were Doug, Jeff G, Greg Ahlbrook(second time on a bike – “Two Timer”), and “The Love Train”.

The turn onto Martha Chapel did not produce the immediate pace line as expected. Martha Chapel is typically a very fast gradual downhill slop all the way to Lake Jordan. A well organized draft line can hit and sustain 30 mph with the sprint going out just as the road flattens and the lake comes into view.
The group remained unorganized for the longest time. Finally Jeff took the initiative and “JUMPED” away from the group as if to say “Are we going or NOT”. This was responded to by “the Love Train”, the COPES, Doug Augustine, and Larry Kaminski – “Kamikaze Larry”.
Kevin tried to prod the Ladies into forming a pace line to respond in kind. No one made the move so he slowly began to press the pace with Theresa, Sheila, and Patti all falling in line behind. As the run down Martha’s Chapel unfolded Zachary fell off the back of the lead group and was not swallowed up by the chase group until near the end of the run. Once at the intersection of Martha Chapel and Farrington Kevin was seen circling several times as each trailing rider was allowed to regroup and take the first short break of the days ride.

And then the UNTHINKABLE happened.

Jeff who was the first to attack on Martha’s Chapel was also the first to attack on what is known as "KEVINS CRAWL". He again “JUMPED” early to lay “CLAIM” to the next section of road. This sacred piece of ground has always been were Kevin is allowed to pull slowly past each rider to take the Pull position and remain there all the way to the next turn. This section of road has always been “CLAIMED” as Kevin’s.
Jeff jumped onto “Kevin’s Crawl” like some one during the Gold Rush “Jumping someone else’s Claim”. This was accomplished while Kevin was still circling and making sure everyone was OK before setting them out onto “Kevin’s Crawl”. Kevin did not notice Jeff’s move and was in no particular hurry to release the group until all had responded with a convincing OK signaling they had recovered enough for the next section. Kevin then released the group only to notice that Jeff and Now Kristine, and Patty, and Sheila all were well down “Kevin’s Crawl”. How can this be, what had he done to deserve such disrespect.

Did they really believe they could “Jump His Claim”.

Kevin had no choice but to attempt to run them down. Jeff was already at the steepest part of the climb with the ladies all working in a draft line starting their climb. Kevin was still back at the intersection at Martha Chapel and initially considered just remaining at the back of the pack. Then he thought “I have always been the first over the top” “Yes I am usually caught but allowed the victory anyway” “How can I live with myself if I just let this go unanswered” “I have no hope of catching Jeff anyway so why try” “Because you own this section of road”, and with that Kevin pulled on the handle bars, dropped his heals, and prepared himself for the painful lung burning event that was to take place. 11 mph quickly became 17 mph on the initial flat section of road that was still alongside the lake shore. Kevin knew this lasted only a few feet and prepared for the sudden sensation of lactic acid build up in his thighs. To counteract this he changed his attention to focus on using his hips and shins to pull up on the pedals rather than his thighs to mass on the pedals. This he knew would only last for an instant as his brain and body would catch on to his game and report back to him that they had wised up and now would punish him with a higher heart rate, and the sensation of drowning due to lack of Oxygen. The only Hope Kevin had to respond to this was to have placed himself in position of passing the ladies. This would trick the brain into thinking that the body was willing and able to make the next jump to the lead rider. The adrenalin rush gained from that small victory could help with that next gap attempt. As Kevin rolled past the ladies his speedometer registered 22 mph providing yet another psychological boost to the failing body. Kevin knew better than looking at the heart rate monitor, because the story it would tell would undermine the false sense of strength he was currently wielding over himself. He also knew not to look up the climb as this would surely destroy all the work he had invested into tricking himself that he was truly a great bike rider capable of racing up hill and jumping the gap to a breakaway rider much stronger than he. But now what, Kevin was in familiar territory, the dead zone known as NO-MANS land. He no longer had a target within reach, he had the steepest part of the climb still ahead, his games and tricks were now old news and his body was angry at the game he tried to play on it.

Then as if predicted long ago Kevin’s 3 years of always first to the top of “KEVINS CRAWL” came to a sad end. Once over the top Jeff was seen slowing and drifting back just behind Kevin to learn what the next turn would be. Once Kevin had gained the strength to signal a left turn onto Holland Chapel Jeff bolted ahead to be the first to the turn. No words were exchanged between the riders until after the turn was successfully completed. Jeff was the first to talk. “SO Why is that called Kevin’s Crawl”. Ouch, was all Kevin could think. Here was Jeff the “Claim Jumper” rubbing his victory into the open wounds of his most recent victim. Jeff had truly not been aware of the unwritten law that Kevin shall always be the first to the top of “Kevin’s Crawl”.
Please do not be hard on Jeff the “Claim Jumper”, He did not mean to Disrespect “GOG”. He was just acting in the spirit of a “THORN”.

The next time Kevin finds himself on that section of road it will be difficult to push for the top. The next time the group rides what was once “Kevin’s Crawl” please allow him to handle this giant disappointment in total solitude as he struggles to make the climb up from Lake Jordan on now what is known as “Jeff’s Jump”.

The pack assembled quickly on Holland Chapel with Doug Augustine setting a blistering pace. In fact he had been working the front of the pace line a great deal all day and was there for every attack. Note – he did show great respect on Kevin’s Crawl.

When asked by “GOG” what it was that allowed Doug m"Rumble Strip" to ride so strong all day his reply was “WAFFELS”. Apparently he and Sheila got up early enough to make and then consume well over 4 WAFFELS each.

As the ride unfolded on “Doug’s Waffle RUN” Kevin asked Brandy how she was doing. She replied, “Fine, I am having fun”. This was great news and indicated that the group had not punished her to the point that maybe she might come back.

Doug’s "Rumble Strip's" continued pressure at the front of the pack scattered the cyclists all along the length of Holland Chapel - “Doug’s Waffle Run”.
It was here that Dani informed “The Love Train” that he was going too fast.
Jeff "Claim Jumper" needs to be blamed first due to his run up “Kevin’s Crawl” – now “Jeff’s Jump” which set the stage to punish all those behind him. tthat was then followed by “DOUG’s WAFFLE RUN” on Holland Chapel putting a nail in the coffin of several of the riders. “The Love Train” was only reacting out of instinct and cannot be blamed for going too fast. He was actually showing great restraint.

The group barely re-assembled at the Strawberry patch. By this time not only were Dani and the now punished “Love Train” missing from the back of the pack but Greg Ahlbrooks “Two Timer” and his riding buddy Larry Kaminski “Kamikaze Larry” were well behind. Larry was playing the role of a true support domestic for “Two Timer” by riding along side and encouraging him as he was in the middle of a monumental “GOG” like BONK.

“Capn Carbon” , Zachary, Jeff, Ying So and Doug "Rumble Strip" were all smelling the county line sprint and could not be contained. Ying So clearly is not an average SO - SO rider. He is strong and always in the hunt. Due to his solid riding style his new nickname is “SO - SO”. “Capn Carbon” was planning on joining the CSH riders as they leave Cary and was ready to get on down the road. Kevin did not have to release these riders as they had made that decision for themselves. The others remained close to “GOG” as he was turning his attention more to those now suffering from the powerful hands that punished them on “Jeff’s Jump” and “Doug’s WAFFEL RUN”.
Basically without a word “GOG” told “Capn” to let his people Go.

The “Thorns” were not seen again until the finish accept for “Capn Carbon” who waved to the remaining “Stems” as he was now in the pace line of the CSH ride headed back towards Lake Jordan.

Those finishing miles scattered the “Stems” as many powered on to the end with “GOG” joining “Kamikaze Larry” and “Two Timer” at a pace that allowed the now fully BONKED “Two Timer” to limp on into the finish. This small band of bikers exchanged stories of previous BONKING episodes with “GOG” providing the lion’s share of stories.

NOTE.
It was learned later that Capn had lots of mechanical issues with his classic bike during the CSH ride.
It has been reported that after the sprint for the county line his seat tilted up, and it was learned that his handle bars came loose. His handle bars apparently became loose in the head set and as long as he was riding in a straight line he did not notice. It wasn’t until the turn at the strawberry patch that he noticed his bike still going straight even though his handle bars were turned. The CSH hammer head group did not stop to help, and he had no Allen wrench to tighten the bars. Finally one of the trailing riders from the B group stops only after “Capn Carbon” begged for him to stop and after he promised he could pull the rider back to the CSH pack.
After the quick adjustment “Capn” did in fact pull himself and his rescuer back to the pack. “Capn” did not stop there but continued past the B group and then on past the Hammer heads as if to say “HA TAKE THAT”.

The end of another great weekend of riding with a great group of folks.
Thinking of those from the “Thorns and Roses” who are riding across Iowa the last week of July.
