Jeff Giordano – a “Thorn” thru and thru ready for any challenge and any attack
Christy Miller – “Pinky” – “Pink Triassolette”
John Garrity – First time with the group – Welcome John
Steve Ham…..
Steve Marks – has ridden several time with the Thorns (always in a green jersey and shorts) “The Green Machine” – likes to participate in the attacks.
Ernest Davis – riding to the start just in time to join them as they headed out.
The ride brief was brief. Something about Lystra maybe for some of those interested.
A mention that Jae was there to lead the “Roses” and “Capn Cabon” would lead the “Thorns/Stems”.
All riders left the parking lot together and remained in that format as they made the right turn into the Preston neighborhood. The “Roses” were tucked into the middle of the group just at Jae threw a chain.
“You OK” shouted “GOG”. “Yea just dropped the chain, you guys go on, we are OK” responded the ride leader of the “Roses”. That was the first split in the ride groups. It was later learned that the “Roses” had wanted to ride further with the “Thorns/Stems” before splitting but the chain issue made that split early.
The “Thorns/Stems” remained in a group with “Capn Carbon” doing a great job of leading the pack through Preston, out onto “Ron’s Pull” and down the entire length of Carpenter Fire Station Road.
“Capn” then directed the group to make the right turn onto Yates Store (away from Upchuck hill) and into the newly opened section of road.
The humidity was so high that it felt Claustrophobic to be outside. Breathing was similar to the type of breath one gets when swimming the crawl stroke in an indoor heated pool. Wet, Heavy, limited Oxygen with each breathe.
As the pack of cyclists reached the end of Yates Store and made the left turn onto O’Kelly Theresa was beginning to fall off the pace. She asked “GOG” to hold back and ride with here as the other riders were all still just warming up (Literally) for the days ride. “I just can’t keep up!”, “I don’t know what is wrong”, “They are riding at speeds I can do, but I just can’t seem to sustain right now” were the apologies being shared with “GOG” from Theresa.
“No problem, I am struggling in the heat and humidity and will be happy to ride with you”, was the reply from “GOG”. As these two trailing riders continued their journey on O’Kelly they remained within eye site of the leading pack but were unable to close the gap. “Capn Carbon” pulled out of the front group to circle back and checked on the two stragglers.
“GOG” informed “Capn” that they would ride the route at a slower pace and would be there to pick up anyone that gets splintered of the back of the “Thorns”. “You Sure you are OK” inquired “Capn”. “YES”, “we will likely meet you at the Gas Station at Lystra, if not before” responded “GOG”.
With that “Capn” bolted back to the front of the lead group where he then edged the pace up past the previous mph average. Theresa and Kevin both continued to ride a smooth pace all they way down 751, onto Stage Coach, and then the left turn onto Old Farrington and its hills leading to the corner Gas Station at Lystra. On several sections of road these two trailing riders maintained 19 mph. Theresa again made the comment, “I could keep up with them I just couldn’t do it earlier, and the hills always gap me from the pack”. She did ride a solid pace even with being dropped early in the ride. Once dropped it is very very difficult to bridge the gap (unless you are Capn Carbon – who takes great joy in running down riders in the distance).
All riders were reassembled at the corner Gas Station on Lystra and Farrington. There they rested briefly in the shade, topped off water bottles (thanks to the sag stop for the organized MisFits Ice-cream ride), and visited with a rider that had been scooped up by “Capn Carbon”. This rider was amazed that he had been swallowed up by the group as he was charging down the road at over 21 mph. He now elected to ride with the group as “Capn Carbon” went on to explain all about the “Thorns” and “Roses” and how they roll.
“OK”, “I said we would do Lystra”, “so we are going to climb up jack Benett, and come down Lystra” was the new set of instructions from ride leader “Capn Carbon”. With little delay the pack was off and this time with Kevin and Theresa included in the pack.
As Jack Benett’s long steady climb unfolded several riders moved to the front to press the pace and to meet the challenge of the climb. Those making a play for the front positions included; Jeff G, Jeffery “Down Hill Racer”, Tim “the Love Train”, Steve Marks “The Green Machine”, Ernest Davis, and Steve Cope “Capn Carbon”. Those climbing consistently thru the entire climb included; Christy Miller “Pinky”, Kim, John Garrity, Kevin “GOG”, Steve Ham…., and Theresa.
No one had to wait very long for the tail end of the group to arrive at the end of Jack Benett and the intersection at 15/501. “OK” “Lets make the turn here towards Lystra, do the down hill and meet at the corner Gas Station again, anyone who wants to climb Lystra can join me as I will turn at the bottom and climb to the 2nd c rest and then back down again all the way to the Gas Station” were the next set of instructions provided by the ride leader. “He is sick, just plain sick” was the reply provided by Jeff G.
With that the pack was off at an easy pace riding the shoulder of 15/501 to the next right at Lystra.
Lystra’s first 2 miles are a slight uphill with several small crests to conquer prior to the fast 1 ½ mile down hill towards its end. Each rider made the turn onto Lystra and immediately picked up the pace in anticipation of the fun/fast downhill that can produce coasting speeds of just over 40 mph.
The pack became strung out during this first 2 or 3 miles as each rider was now feeling the heat and humidity and now the SUN. During the last mile prior to the down hill “GOG” elected to crank up the rpms and mph to see if he can launch himself into the down hill with as much momentum as possible.
As he struggled to increase speed he realized several things.
1. He started the run to the downhill too early.
2. The heat and humidity had already zapped him.
3. He is still too out of shape to push the peddles for any distance greater than a few yards.
Kevin was able to reach 46.6 mph as he was the second person to descend Lystra. As he was in the steepest part of the downhill he tucked into a tight streamlined posture and took the middle of the lane for safety reasons. His eyes were watering from the wind as he observed a vehicle coming up the hill partly in his lane due to the fact that the car was passing “Capn Carbon” who was already starting his climb up Lystra.
Back at the corner Gas Station all riders regrouped for a brief stop allowing all to arrive safely.
The pack was now directed to make the run down Farrington and to the easy climb up Martha Chapel. “Capn Carbon” did a great job of keeping the group together all the way to the strawberry patch.
At the strawberry patch those who still had the strength to attack were all readying themselves for the sprint to the county line. “GOG” informed “Capn” that he will likely fall off the pace as he anticipated the increase in speed from the ride leaders. “We will do Nicole’s Roller Coaster” was “Capn’s” comeback. “Great, after the run down Capn’s Grave Yard” lets take everyone back into Preston and then the back way into the finish”. “You know how to get them there?” “GOG” attempted to inform and then confirm how to finish the day’s route with “Capn”. “I think so” was all that was supplied by “Capn”.
The pack pulled away from Kevin and Theresa as they once again struggled to beat the heat and ride without BLOWING UP. Steve Ham… had elected to ride with the two trailing riders as well.
The rest of the ride was one of survival for the 3 trailing riders. At one point in the ride Steve Ham… was riding nice and easy only to comment “On RAGBRAI I will still have another 50 miles to go for the day”. Then there was great silence as all three measured how they felt and tried to project how bad another 50 miles in the heat, hills and humidity would be like. Please note IOWA is NOT FLAT, and IS HOT, and HUMID.
Once the three trailing riders swung onto “Capn’s Grave Yard” Kevin suggested they go into the end thru Preston and the back way onto Cary Parkway. “Why do you want to do that” asked Steve Ham….
“More miles and more Hills” was the reply from “GOG”.
Without argument the three riders accepted the last challenge of the day.
These three completed 53.3 miles at an average speed of 16.8 mph.
The “Thorns” led by “Capn Carbon” did 47 miles at an average pace of 17.8 mph.
They did not elect to do the extra miles and hills at the finish but rather came in straight off of “Capn’s Grave Yard” and onto High House. (Capn probably did not know how do the route described by “GOG” earlier)
It was also learned that on “Capn’s Grave Yard” Jeff G, and “The Love Train” did everything they could to hold onto “Capn” as he pulled them along at 28 mph in his attempt to add more victims to the “Grave Yard”.
The following link was supplied by Kim and her Garman monitor.

Subdued Sunday
June 21, 2009
Heat was not as sever as on Saturday.
Many of the riders were still trying to recover from Saturday’s high heat and humidity.
“Capn Carbon” and “GOG” worked together to design a route that would provide for 30 -35 miles and with a return trip that allowed anyone who wanted the chance to jump in with the CSH ride as it heads out of town and towards Lake Jordan.
Those in attendance included;
Steve Cope – “Capn Carbon”
Kevin Smit – “GOG”
Theresa Smit
Kim Braschwitz – she has been telling all her friends about these rides and had 3 of them show up for this days ride. – She also earned her Nickname on this days ride. Read on to find out what it is.
Laura Spell – read to learn what her new Nickname is.
Ying So – one of Kim’s friends joining the group for the first time
Jeff Giordano – back for more
Steve Ham….
Jeffery Roussel – “Down Hill Racer”
Karyn Long – one of Kim’s friends also joining the group for the first time
Mike Long – joining the group for the first time came with Karyn
Paul Eppers
Barbara Wedel
Todd Spain “TriTodd” stopped in just long enough to say hi to everyone and then he headed for the start of the CSH ride.
Short introductions were made and each rider was challenged to meet and greet more while on the day’s ride.
Jeff and Jeffery both took the rains and led the pack out of the parking lot and onto HighHouse.
The pace was very comfortable allowing all to form two draft lines as the group headed into Preston.
At the light on Davis drive Jeffery zoomed over to press the walk button in an attempt to speed up the red light green light pattern. Just as he pushed the button the signal changed from red to green and the riders jumped across the intersection. Jeff and Jeffery both continued to take the lead positions and worked to block the pack from pressing the pace or from sporadic attacks. They were not challenged allowing them to keep the pack in formation and at a pace that all could enjoy while continuing to visit with others. The only times the pack was scattered was at the turn out of Preston and onto Lewis Stevens due to cars and then again at the end of Lewis Steven’s again due to cars.
Jeff and Jeffery continued to control the pack from the front as they directed all onto “Ron’s” pull. “GOG” expected to have to work hard to hold onto these stronger “Thorns” as they would be expected to ramp up the speed to well over 20 mph on this stretch of road.
17 mph was established and maintained the entire length of “Ron’s” pull, not even “Capn Carbon” pulled out of line to press the pace. About half way down that road “GOG” noticed that Barbara’s rear was wiggling slightly. “Hey your rear end is Wobbling slightly” he shouted to the rider in front of him.
Those around them went silent as they worked to understand what was just suggested by “GOG”.
“Are you referring to my rear wheel”? asked Barbara. “Yea that too?” replied “GOG” with a big grin on his face. “It looks like you have a couple of loose spokes” he went on to explain.
Once at the end of “Ron’s Pull” Kim was heard asking “IS that ALL YOU GOT”. This comment is now Kim’s Nickname. This did not stir the ride leaders into being egged on to push any harder. The double pace line remained intact even down Carpenter Fire Station road with the pace increasing slightly to 19 mph on that stretch.
Barbara was asking “GOG” about cadence and if he monitors his. The discussion touch on spinning and the value of not pushing big gears and the techniques involved in shifting and the timing of shifting on climbs.
The next intersection had the pack turning left onto Yates Store. Each rider prepared for the run to and then up the hill nicknamed by the group as “UpChuck” which is what all feel they are about to do as they crest this short but steep climb. This hill is also a great place to attack each other to see who can claim victory at it’s crest.
Jeffery, Jeff, and Paul, all readied themselves for the expected attacks. “Capn Carbon” positioned himself strategically to observe those just ahead of him, keeping them within striking distance once he decides to respond to any effort they may produce. “GOG” elected to roll into position near the middle of the pack to warn those around him of the many pot holes and to also find a spot to maneuver and stage his attack - if his momentum and gear selection were in sink.
As the attacks unfolded each rider was stalled by gravity with “Capn Carbon” working only hard enough to ensure he could crest the hill just ahead of everyone else. “GOG” was watching all this unfold and measuring his response to the gear selection and his momentum to see if and when he would attack. “GOG” made the snap decision to see if he could spin and maintain the momentum up the hill for as long as possible. This was not a formal attack but rather a reaction to best make the crest of the hill for him. In this effort he rolled past all in front while standing and spinning the crank arms so hard that the front derailleur could be heard rubbing the chain as the frame on his bike would bend with each stoke of the pedal. The Crest of the hill was just feet away as “GOG” rolled up shoulder to shoulder with “Capn Carbon”. “Where did you come from” chuckled “Capn”. “GOG” could not reply as his heart rate had already maxed out and he was now well into the anaerobic twilight zone.
A high five was exchanged between the two riders as they slowed once over the crest and continued to the next intersection/ rendezvous for the group. “Capn” and “GOG” began to circle and were joined by each rider as they made that location. The last to arrive was Theresa. This prompted Jeff, and Jeffery, to leave the circling and head towards the next intersection. “GO Straight all the way to 751” was the orders shouted from “GOG” knowing he would not be able to guide them from his trailing position.
Kevin began to follow those two riders but noticed in his mirror that the pack was still stalled at the intersection and in fact some appeared to be huddled over Laura’s bike. Kevin made a u-turn to rejoin the pack and ensure all was OK. “MY Cleat came off the bottom of my shoe” cried Laura as she was digging in the dirt to try and find the screws needed to fix the problem. She was only able to locate one of the screws and with help from “Capn Carbon” they reattached the cleat as best they could. At that same time Barbara was looking at her rear wheel and trying to spin it only to discover that the wheel would not complete a turn and would rub on the brake pads. She and Paul tried to realign the wheel but the results were the same. Upon closer inspection by “Capn Carbon” and “GOG” it was clear that the loose spokes had gotten worse. “GOG” positioned the tire to identify the culprit Spokes as “Capn Carbon” fetched his spoke wrench. In time that would make a pit crew chief grin “Capn Carbon” had trued the wheel. “WOW he is good” exclaimed Laura. “Yea he was not only a bike racer in his day but also a bike mechanic” was the historical bit of information supplied by “GOG”.
All repairs completed and the pack was off onto New Hope Church Road. The speeds on this section of road held steady even up and over the several hills found early on this road. “GOG” had a brief conversation with Laura about the impressive Power Strokes she produces that resulted in her Screws becoming lose and her cleats falling off her shoes. He suggested that her nickname might be “Power Stroker” or “Screw Lose”. In retrospect she does push some mightily big gears so “Power Stroker” it is.
The pack reformed at the turn onto 751 with Jeffery once again setting the pace for all to follow. This run up to Martha Chapel kept the pack in tact up to the very last climb. No need to circle at Martha’s Chapel since all riders were close at hand.
Another double draft line formed with Jeff and Jeffery again in the pull positions. The run down Martha’s Chapel was the most subdued and controlled of the season. Speeds did not rise about 19 mph, and it was not until all could see Lake Jordan in the distance before the attack would begin.
It was there that “Capn Carbon” moved slowly up the pace line as he stalked the two Jeff’s. Just like a lioness waiting for the best moment, he allowed the two lead riders to slowly roll off the front. Now Jeff and Jeffery were no longer protected by the pack but had put themselves out in the clear for all to see. No other support to help them maintain speed against the head wind. Yet “Capn Carbon” was seen bouncing from wheel to wheel as he continued to creep towards the front of the pace line knowing all the while that those left in the pace line would naturally increase speed thinking also of the targets that lay ahead. “Capn Carbon” paused only long enough to judge the speed of those two targets, against the speed of the pace line, and the distance to travel before he could subdue his pray.
Then without warning he jumped, throwing his bike from side to side, ever accelerating and as he did so the two pray were beginning to falter. He had timed the situation perfectly.
“Capn Carbon” had once again proven his superior skills as a stalker/attacker of other riders.
This entire episode spawned several others to emulate “Capn Carbon”. “Come On Kevin Lets get em” shouted Barbara as she, and Karyn were seen jumping into the gap and taking chase, as did Kim, and Paul, even the new rider Ying So made a play.
Once at the intersection of Martha Chapel and Farrington the pack was directed onto “Kevin’s Crawl” which is also known to the “Roses” as “Theresa’s Tug”. The first onto Farrington and headed up hill towards Holland Chapel was Karyn (no one had informed her of the honored pull position that is always awarded Kevin on this section of road). She was followed by “GOG” who was now already working way too hard to pull past Karyn who was then responding to increase her speed as if both were vying for that honored pull position. Jeffery Roussel was found tight onto “GOG’s” rear wheel and had the look of a rider who was not going to let anyone get away. The three remained locked into the ever-increasing response to each other’s effort. “GOG” slowly crept past Karyn to then see Jeffery Roussel Squarely in his mirror. “GOG” knew he would be challenged all the way up this climb today. Together he and Jeffery slowly pulled away from Karyn as they reached 22 mph on the last part of the climb. “GOG” backed off just shy of the major crest as Jeffery rolled on past and into the downhill that would place him at Holland Chapel. “GOG” continued to coast as he was then passed by Karyn who was next to the turn onto Holland Chapel. “Capn Carbon” had not made a play out of pure respect for “GOG”.
The group was back together and lots of chitchat continued the entire length of that section of road.
It was learned that one of the riders parents (Mike Long) ? had owned the land at the corner of 751 and Holland Chapel and had sold it not long ago to Apex Nursery.
The turn at the strawberry patch had the group all looking forward to the last 15 miles on home along with the sprint to the county line. This and UpChuck were the only two attacks mounted by “Capn Carbon” on this day’s ride with the “Thorns”. He saved his full attack energy for the second half of his ride that included another run to Lake Jordan and back with the CSH riders.
The rest of the route included the turn into Cary Glen where “Capn Carbon” was able to join the CSH ride as they were exiting this same neighborhood. The “Thorns” continued onto “Nicole’s Roller Coaster”, out of Cary Glenn and onto Carpenter Fire Station. The pack did splinter slightly as they made their way to and then thru the light at Highway 55. The pack regrouped just prior to the run down “Capn’s Grave Yard”. It was on “Capn’s Grave Yard” that several folks elected to light it up. Those included Kim who was first to jump. She was later followed by Jeff, and Jeffery. Also looking to push the pace for those last couple of miles were Karyn, Ying So, and Paul. The others were happy to ride together at a sustained speed of 19 mph all the way to High House.
Onto HighHouse the group timed it right to get the green light and from there Theresa led the way back to the finish at Brueggers.
The group completed 33.3 miles at an average pace of 16.8 mph.

The group was to ride as one until after the turn for home and the interception of the CSH riders as they were headed out of town. This pattern has worked well in the past for all in the group. It provides for a comfortable warm up for the “Thorns” and stretches the “Stems and Roses” to ride at a strong clip with the day’s mileage staying around 30 – 35 for them.
A short ride description that suggested hills early on in the ride and the pack was released to the streets of Cary. It was an orderly beginning as the riders slid into the Preston Neighborhood and then Squirted out the other end at Lewis Stevens and Carpenter Upchurch. They were directed left towards the first major hill of the day that would end at the Intersection of Holt and Jenks Carpenter.
The Pack did not have to hold up long to allow all to arrive at that intersection to learn what turn was next. “GOG” had already discussed the design of the day’s ride with “Capn Carbon” so there would be no tricks to pull on “Cap’n” today.
The pack formed a single pace line as they headed out of town on Holt and towards the next turn that would take place at Roberts Road. “Capn Carbon” and many of the other “Thorns” were riding well in the back of the pace line. As the riders closed in on Roberts Road some of the “Thorns” worked their way into the lead positions. This would set them up for the fast time trial push down Roberts Road all the way to Green Level. “GOG” was near the front of the pack and watched as “The Love Train”, Jeff G, and “Down Hill Racer” began to pull away. “GOG” was at that time busy visiting with Carrie about how attack and recover helps build speed. This is something he has never experienced; he just has observed how that works for others. The small pack of “Thorns” now had a very large gap in the bank as “GOG” began to worry that “Capn Carbon” was somewhere in the back not paying attention.
As “GOG” glanced in his mirror he was startled by the movement over his left shoulder. There in an instant was “Capn Carbon” with Dayn on his wheel. “GOG” responded by jumping on the pedals and making his play to join in on the chase. 31 mph was held by those in chase, until they had successfully joined the break-away group.
The intersection at Roberts Road and Green Level was dotted with potholes, the breakaway used superior bike handling skills to avoid them at neck breaking speed. “GOG” elected to pull out and circle back to warn the oncoming Peloton of the danger.
The “Thorns” pulled up once they realized “GOG” had circled back.
Once all were warned, “GOG” then turn back to the route and rolled through the intersection yelling at the “Thorns” “What are we going to stop and chit chat at every turn or are we going to RIDE”. The grin on his face told all he was still making light of the last time he barked at the group in frustration.
The “Thorns” responded by racing past “GOG” and taking the next turn without delay. The pack was now headed into the large hills of Green Level, which would surely scatter the group. “Where should we wait next?” inquired “Capn” knowing he could not restrain the “Thorns” from shredding the pack.
“At Luther”, “You know the left turn after that old white house on the curve near the top of the last climb”, replied “GOG”. He knew he needed to provide details that included street names, and landmarks for the navigationally challenged “Capn”.
Again all riders successfully met the challenge of the hills and all again found each other at that next meeting spot. For the “Thorns” it is a sprint and wait, for the “Stems” it is a push hard and pause, for the “Roses” it is a get there and keep going type of rendezvous.
Luther is another section of the route littered with hills of various length and grade. There was no pace line formed as each rider prepared for the last two largest climbs of the day located near the end of Luther. It was there that the pack elected to hover once again allowing all to regroup. As “GOG” rolled through that intersection someone from the group shouted that Theresa had thrown her chain on the last climb and was not yet in sight. “OK” “Lets just go slow until the turn at Horton Pond, She knows the route and can catch up there” was the directions provided back to the group by “GOG”.
He had informed Theresa of the next several turns in the event she held back to cover for anyone who may have fallen off the back and had not been detected by the lead riders.
Just as the group gathered for Horton Pond Theresa and Steve Sparano “Sporadic Steve” were seen cresting the hill behind. “Sporadic Steve” had stopped to ensure Theresa was OK and to help pull her back to the group.
No resting at Horton Pond since the group was comfortable that Theresa was OK and that she had support, and knew were the route was headed. Here again no draft lines were formed as clumps of riders either attacked each other on the hills, or thru natural selection found themselves pushing up the hills at the relative speed of others around them. Or, maybe the clumps were formed by those enjoying each other’s company, and to continue the ongoing chit chat that had started earlier in the day’s ride.
The “ROSES” may have infected the “Thorns” and “Stems” with their extreme Socializing Attitudes.
“Thanks for looking after Theresa” Kevin was heard as he acknowledged the excellent NO DROP sprit demonstrated by “Sporadic Steve”, and the extra effort performed to pull her back to the pack.
At the end of Horton Pond the pack was held up just long enough for “GOG” to formally release the “Thorns” for the entire rest of the ride route.
“OK, anyone looking to either light it up for the last 15 or so miles, or are looking to Join the CSH group and get extra miles, GO with CAPN CARBON”. “Don’t worry if you get splintered we will be just behind riding the same route at a slightly calmer pace and can pick you up along the way if needed”, was the final instructions provided to the “Thorns” from “GOG” for that day’s ride.
Those electing to join “Capn” included Jeff G, “The Love Train”, and “Dynamo Dayn” ( yes he now has a nick name).
All others were going to be happy to just get done well before noon and log 35 miles at a good pace for the days ride. Besides there was still a lot to talk about in the various clumps of riders, and they knew it would be a challenge to continue those conversations if riding with the “Thorns”.
The “stems” were now officially formed as the “Thorns” left the group and charged on down Farrington to the right turn onto Holland Chapel.
The “Stems” road at a strong clip that still allowed for the very important continuation of conversation. They completed Holland Chapel and the turn at the strawberry patch. Here Susanne McBee told everyone how nice the strawberry’s smell during the picking season and how that always makes her hungry. This was the catalyst that turned all other conversations into something to do with Food.
And the conversations continued as the pack of “Stems” rolled on down Luter Shop.
“Don’t forget the sprint at the county line” Kevin shouted in an attempt to redirect everyone’s attention from the chit chat back to biking. This did seem to work as each rider’s demeanor changed. There was a short period of confusion as some tried to continue to visit while others were having and internal discussion to determine if they would take up the challenge of the county line sprint. Slowly the conversations died as one by one the “Stems” each had the same internal debate.
Up near the front Susanne, Sheila, and Doug all appeared to ready themselves for the attack.
“The county line can be recognized by the change in color of the road” Kevin provided to those considering their attack or response to attack.
Before any of the leaders mounted their attack “Sporadic Steve” pulled out of line at the tail end of the group and began to mash the gears and peddles all at once. As he pushed by “GOG” the sound he made reminded “GOG” of large blades on a ceiling fan slowly turning but at the same time moving large volumes of air. Whoosh, Whoosh, Whoosh. With each Whoosh being louder and the silence between each getting shorter and shorter. “Sporadic Steve” had jumped extremely early and in doing so gained the advantage of surprise but at the risk of blowing up before the county line.
He was well past the lead riders before they even recognized what had happened. Each took pause to now re-evaluate if they wanted to push for the county line from that far away, and to again have the internal debate of “do I throw myself into this silly game”. Then one at a time with Susanne responding first they answered the call. This had a ripple effect on the group as others were spurred to respond as well. Carrie, Doug, and Sheila all made a play to increase their speeds. Each group that responded did so more delayed than the group ahead of them, and with less intensity, and for a shorter attempt leaving “Sporadic Steve” as the bar setter and Susanne as the number one challenger followed by Sheila and Doug who were increasing their commitment to the chase/sprint.
And the winner is “Sporadic Steve” as he was able to hold on as Susanne was close to catching him at the end. The others who jumped did not slow just because there was a winner; they continued their sprint once committed.
“GOG” was riding at that point with Carrie as he announced the winner to her she replied, “I thought the sprint started at the county line”.
The pack slowly re-assembled on the fly as they continued to make progress towards the turn into Cary Glenn and the rolling hills there nick named “Nicole’s Roller Coaster”.
The group learned at that point that Theresa had prompted “Sporadic Steve” to jump early for the county line in anticipation of the sprint and the talent that was leading the pack.
As the group made the turn into Cary Glen they expected to see the CSH riders heading out with the “Thorns” in the mix. NO CSH, did they get a late start, did they take a different route?
Nicole’s Roller Coasters provided just as much speed and excitement as always with the first long fast downhill providing enough momentum to let the cyclist’s coast to the next hills crest. Then the real work began to crest the middle hill with some assist from momentum, and then the last hill that provided for no carryover of momentum.
All riders made it to the next set of turns putting them onto Carpenter Fire Station Road. Just after that turn they could see a wall of cyclists blocking one entire lane for several hundred yards. Off to the side, working to find a spot to jump in were the “Thorns”. A quick wave to the CSH riders and a node to the “Thorns” and the two groups passed in opposite directions, one just starting their push towards Lake Jordan and the other heading home from that same location.
The finishing route for the “Stems” included a run down Carpenter Fire Station and the next stretch onto Carpenter Upchurch also nicknamed “Captains Grave Yard” as cyclists travel on it headed back into Cary. However today the group was directed to turn early off of this path to roll into the Preston Neighborhood from Lewis Stevens origin.
This was were others like Susanne McBee, Jeffery Roussel, and one other elected to ride home parting company.
The Stems completed 33.4 miles at a 15.8 mph average and were done and ready to order bagels by 10:12 am.

A Tale of a Kinder Gentler Ride
Roses Ride Saturday – June 13
Jae – Rose Matriarch
Sheila – It's Freakin hot
Theresa – Stem supporting the Roses
Deborah - Two-saddles
Patty – Thorny Rose
Beth – Can only pedal while talking
Maryann – not scared off by exaggerated tales of Thorn distances and pace
After getting virtually left in the dust of the Thorns the previous week to be picked up by the Stems it was an easy decision for Sheila and Theresa to rejoin the more reasonable style of the Roses. Roses actually carry on conversations and stop occasionally for butt breaks and power food. And yes they also ride at a not-so-shabby pace of over 15 mph for 35-40+ miles.
The Roses & Thorns took off and stayed together thru Preston and across Davis, then the Thorns turned left on Carpenter Upchurch and the Roses opted for a right turn on Jae's Jog (aka Ron's-pull). Sheila, Theresa and Jae took turns pulling the line past Green Hope high school and then the group stopped for a brief discussion before doing the gig-jog to cross 55 on Carpenter Fire Station. Beth had to turn back before UpChuck so she could make the other 50 commitments she had for the day.
Note for the Thorns:
There are more things that need to be done during the weekend other than a 40-50+ mile bike ride. There are kids to haul to events, shopping for groceries, volunteering at the church, cleaning the house, gardening, lunch with the parent(s), doing work that did not get done during the week, laundry, mowing the grass, paying the bills, making hair appointments, getting our nails done
and did a mention shopping...
Back to the ride.
Deborah wanted to try to pull so Jae attempted to instigate a rotating draft line yelling to Maryann to tell Sheila who was in the lead to swing out to allow the next in line to take the lead. Theresa, who does not hear so well with wind in her ears, didn't get what was going on and proceeded to tell Sheila that Jae wants her to go, go, go faster and pick up the pace.
That lasted until the turn to Upchuck where Theresa dropped back to find out the true intent of Jae's instructions....
Ok we can try that down Martha's Chapel then, now that we all (especially Theresa) understand.
Drafting to a Rose is normally something we only participate in when trying to survive a very windy day or long grueling ride with a willing Thorn/Stem to let us tuck in behind them. This draft-line concept, of rotating the lead is only something that we have watched, while doing other productive work, on the Verses Network running of some foreign cycling race where the peloton consumes the leaders in the last 5 miles of some 100+ mile day of some 30 something day race event.
The Roses can do this, how hard can it be?
All regrouped at the top of Upchuck and continued on, making a right on New Hope Church Rd., where the rolling terrain allowed the group to carry on conversations, around what was going on in each of thier lives as this was one of the few opportunities to talk. Jae was looking for something to do Friday night, Sheila thought is was freekin hot, Patty was very proud of Nicole for getting into the PHD program, Maryann had been showing more houses so perhaps the economy is picking up, Theresa grilled Patty on her methods of assigning her husband yard duty tasks, and he did them! Deborah just gave notice to quit her job and was excited about her new freedom!
The group needed no brake before turning left onto 751 heading for Martha's Chapel.
The group survived the long pulls up the two steady climbs on 751 then turned right at the church and assembled there to try a “Roses pace line!”. “Every 30 seconds the lead swings out”, shouted Theresa.
The Roses executed flawlessly the first rotation of all 6 riders. On the second rotation the rear riders yelled “car-back” so the lead would not swing out into an approaching passing car (as these riders are all well practiced moms always on the look out for the safety of their herd). After this short delay the precision continued until the left turn at the lake. The “Roses” all congratulated each other on a superb execution of the pace line, after all, it was not that hard to do. There was no more mention of trying this technique again, they had mastered it and can execute again anytime they desire.
After a brief nutrition break (Deborah recommends Crank brand gue) the group headed up “Theresa's Tug” (aka Kevin's Crawl) with Sheila relieving Theresa to finish the crest with Patty in tow. They then made the second left onto Horton's Pond where the discussion continued on with Deborah describing the mental stability of Dentists and the plethora of 4 year old horse droppings in her pasture. The riders did the jig-jog onto Luther and then a group vote (Roses are a democracy not Thorn lemmings) took the right on Green Level and its 3 hills prior to the next left at White Oak Church. Taking them back to Green level and onto the familiar last 7 miles back into Preston.
Maryann was feeling her first time back in weeks with the Saturday ride and suggested a turn right to go High House back into Brueggers. The Roses without hesitation were very happy to support this plan as they truly understand the concept of a 'no-drop' ride.
At Brueggers they found Ron and Tracy there waiting to join in on further discussions of how they did not invite Jae out with them to a movie, and how lengthy the last ride write-up was, as well as other biking banter while awaiting the return of the Thorns.
So this write-up will end this now in keeping with the promise to make the write-up readable within one beverage consumption. “Roses Rule!” The “Roses” did approximately 34 miles at about 15, but who keeps track of these things?

Capn Carbon is a hero (but navigationally challenged)
Saturday June 13th.
Another Warm (Hot) humid day was unfolding as the following individuals assembled for the start of the day’s ride.
Those grouping together representing the “Roses” included;
Beth Gonzales – Thanks Beth for helping us solicit area shops for Door Prizes for the Kassel Smit “Make a Difference” Fund raiser. Your efforts are helping us Make A Difference in his memory.
Deb Hollis – still working to get back in shape to rejoin the “Thorns/Stems”
Mary Ann Feagan –Welcome back after several weekends away
Jae Brainard – the TRUE LEADER of the “Roses”.
Patti Lewis – Nicole’s Mom.
Sheila Augustine – sometimes a “Thorn/Stem”
Theresa Smit – Sometimes a “Thorn/Stem”.
Those assembling for the “Thorns/Stems” included;
The Youngsters:
Nicole Lewis – just been accepted into the PHD program at State (congrats) – also single handedly has promoted these rides so effectively that we have more than doubled in our normal numbers. She has been telling all her young wiper Snapper friends from NC State to come and ride HER Rides. She also warns them that they will be riding with people that are her parent’s age, but that they are “OK”.
Nicole was also asking everyone to sign a letter she was going to get to some bikers she knows that are riding across the US and building houses as part of Habitat for Humanity. How COOL is that!
It was later calculated that there is at least a 40 year spread of ages in this dynamic, diverse group of cyclists. Yes “GOG” and Theresa could be their GRAND PARENTS, if they had started their family with a teen pregnancy.
Sean Kurdys – the NC state Triathlon club’s “COACH” (Not a young wiper snapper – but not as old as the other group either)
James Lavin – Young NC State Wiper Snapper
Rita Beard - Young NC State Wiper Snapper – still without cleats and still pushing the pace line.
Cameron Cooper - Young NC State Wiper Snapper (YNCSWS) think about it.
Shawn (forgot your last name sorry) - Young NC State Wiper Snapper (YNCSWS)
Erwann Domalain - Young NC State Wiper Snapper (YNCSWS)
Josh Carter – another youngster who is breaking into Racing as a Cat 5 Racer (not part of Nicole’s NC State group).
Then not in order of age are the not so young riders;
Steve Cope – “Capn Carbon”, “The Angry Chipmunk”, “The Gnat”, “ The Chihuahua”….. and anything else you might want to call him.
Kevin Smit – “GOG” – stands for Glistening Older Gentleman, however others are substituting “Goat” in place of Gentleman. Maybe G.O.A.T stands for “Greatest Of All Time”.
John Majikes – rode to the start with a backpack full of cross county biking stuff. He is training for a four day self supported ride starting in mid/late June.
Jeffery Roussel – Rode to the start and acted as part time ride leader to help Steve Cope recognize where he was on the ride.
Steve Sparano – “Sporadic Steve” rode to the start of the ride, and has been riding with the group regularly lately.
Davin Perkins – rode to the start of the ride with “Sporadic Steve”
Tim Devinney – “The Love Train” – How does this Older Larger Man ride so fast for so long? Was a question that was asked by one of Nicole’s NC State young Wiper Snappers.
Steve Ham….. – Steve is training for the ride across Iowa in the end of July (RAGBRAI).
Steve Marks – no dirt yet on this rider so not much to share here.
Jeff Giordano – Jeff is another strong “Thorn” and also rides the Wednesday night Mello Vello rides.
Christy Miller – “Pinky”, “Pink Triassolette”
Doug Augustine – He and Steve Ham helped “GOG” limp back to the finish on this day’s ride.
Todd Pechner – “Slow Todd” - the last of the “Thorns” to arrive on his bike.
After brief introductions and a hint that LYSTRA would be included somehow on the day’s ride for the “Thorns/Stems” the pack was off.
This Saturdays start was somewhat more subdued/controlled by those in the front of the pack. No one wanted to relive the verbal abuse “GOG” had thrown at the pack early into last Saturday’s ride. This did allow all to stay together all the way through the Preston Neighborhood as the pack was directed to head towards High House rather than onto “Ron’s Pull”. The pack responded and rolled up to the light at High House with many doing a track stand to allow a car from the left to pass. Then each rider leaned right and then left to traverse the intersection and then the immediate left turn onto Jenks Carpenter Road. “Capn Carbon” was near the back of the pack still meeting and greeting many of the riders, and to see who was going to make a play for the run up the hill towards Holt – the first attack of the day.
The pack splintered as the road rose towards Holt and the intersection there. As “GOG” made it to the top he circled to ensure all were still in tow. It did not take long at all for everyone to reassemble at that intersection. The pack was lead out towards Apex on Holt and then the left onto Old Jenks and towards North Salem in Apex. The group rode well together until the series of stop lights heading away from Cary and towards Apex chopped the group into sections. “GOG” was in the front group and was readying himself for the push down N. Salem and the edge of Apex. He and his group were at the Over Pass of Highway 64 when word reached them that someone had been dropped and was having bike issues. “GOG” pulled to group off the road to gain a better understanding of the issue and how to best address it. “One of the NC state riders broke a Chain” was the report from others who were relaying the message from the back of the pack. “Any one have a Chain break tool?” “GOG” inquired. “I do” replied Jeff. “OK, Cap’n Carbon, would you be willing to race back with the tool and help them repair the chain, and then Pull the group back to us even though we are heading on down the road?” “Cap’n Carbon” grabbed the chain break tool as he replied “YEP” and headed back towards the stranded cyclist. After a quick inventory it was realized that John Majikes was also missing and someone in the group mentioned that he had stopped at the time of the mechanical issue to assist. Just at that same moment Nicole headed back to support her NC State Comrade.
So before the pack lost any more cyclists “GOG” directed them to saddle up and head on out onto the day’s route. The route had been shared with all as “GOG” explained to “Capn Carbon” where they were going and would likely wait for him if he had not jumped the gap before then.
The “Thorns” would be difficult to control now that they had this valuable information. Once the pack made the next turn off of N. Salem and onto Hunt “GOG” told the “Thorns” to light it up whenever they wanted to, and to make sure they wait at the designated stop for “Capn” and others to regroup.
The run out of Apex was a mixed bouquet of “Thorn’s and Stems” taking turns pushing each other on the many hills that populated that part of the route. Josh (Moving Violation) was holding back and not attacking as he was using the days ride to loosen up for Sundays race, The State Games, that he planned to participate in. This left the NC state Whipper Snappers to mix it up with some of the seasoned “Thorns”, like Jeff, “The Love Train”, and “Slow Todd” to name a few.
The group assembled under a shade tree at the intersection of Olive Chapel Road and Olives Chapel Road. As they waited there several other bike groups zoomed on past as well as some individual riders all out for a day’s ride. “GOG” made several phone Calls to “Capn Carbon” to get a read on where he and his group was, and was only able to leave voice mails.
Steve Sparano “Sporadic Steve” and Davin along with “Moving Violation” all elected to ride slowly back in the direction just traveled to see if they can spot the trailing riders. The pack continued to wait patiently knowing that this is the price you pay in a NO DROP style ride.
“GOG’s” phone rang and as he answered it the group learned that “Sporadic Steve” and the others had traveled a couple of miles back down the road and did not see “Capn” and the others.
The pack continued to wait as they now were also waiting on those that traveled back to find “Capn”.
Within another 5 to 10 minutes “Moving Violation” Davin, and “Sporadic Steve” rejoined the group.
The pack was now itching to get going as the day light was burning and the Sun was gaining strength.
Then with big smiles on their faces “Capn Carbon” and the group he pulled all arrived.
They shared the fact that John Majikes had ridden his bike home to get his bike tool box only to find out he did not have a chain break tool in it. The group also learned that “Capn Carbon” being navigationally challenged missed the turn on his way to rescue Erwann and had to double back to find them.
Everyone got a good laugh out of both Johns fetching of a tool box and “Capn’s” navigational skills.
No time was spent letting the trailing pack rest as the “Thorns” with “Capn Carbon” in the lead pulled out from under the shade tree and headed to the next rendezvous spot as was described by “GOG”.
In that explanation “GOG” was looking directly at “Capn” telling him the turn by turn play on how to lead the “Thorns” to The Gas Station at High way 64 and Beaver Dam road. “Capn” responded, “You Lost Me”. Jeffery Roussel “Down Hill Racer”, Jeff, and “The Love Train” all said “We got it”.
With that the pack was off.
“GOG” brought up the rear as his legs had adjusted to standing and resting and did not want to do the spin the pedals thing.
Again there was no pace line as each rider chose the pace at which they wanted to respond to the continuation of rolling hills that “GOG” had deliberately laid in the way for this day’s challenging ride.
All made it safely to the next stop at Wilsonville (a gas station on 64). There they filled water bottles, took a short bio break if needed, and visited amongst themselves and other riders on different routes and rides. “GOG” was approached by one gentleman who asked to learn more about the “Thorns and Roses”. Emails were exchanged and “safe biking “ was the parting words.
“Slow Todd” needed to head for home due to time constraint and “Moving Violation” was looking to reduce his miles as well. “GOG” gave the two a route back home that would meet their needs, and with that they said goodbye to the group as they headed out together. It was also at this time that a lone rider joined the pack. She had been riding with the CSH group and was dropped. She was looking for someone to ride with and to help her return safely to the end. She ended up being a very Strong rider and jumped into the fray with the “Thorns” as the pack headed out from the rest stop and towards Lake Jordan on Highway 64.
“GOG” found himself pulling the “Stems” down Highway 64 and thru the turn onto Big Woods. The “Stems” were met there by the “Thorn’s”, who were they waiting for “GOG’s” next set of directions.
“OK Thorns this is a great place to time trial, see you at the other end”, and with that the “Thorns, and” Thorn wantabes” all launched themselves onto Big Woods and its rolling hills.
“GOG” continued to pull the “Stems” along Big Woods working to maintain 20+ mph. As the “Stems” rolled along they slowly swooped up those splintered off the back of the “Thorns”. One of those ended up being Kim who then pulled the pack along for a mile or more before relinquishing the Pull position back to “GOG”.
At the end of Big Woods “GOG” offered two choices to the riders. “those looking for extra miles and a long climb followed by a very fast down hill join Capn as he leads you up Jack Benett and down Lystra”, “others join me as I head back from here to Farrington and the gas station stop there.
The pack split in two as “GOG” was now starting to feel the mistake of pushing Big Woods for too long. He was overheating, nauseous, light headed, and on the verge of one of his famous BONKing episodes.
The “Stems” made it to the gas station just as “GOG” was headed into a full BONK. He had to get off his bike, request cold water, Davin went and purchased a gallon, and then bent over to keep from passing out.
“OK Nicole, do you think you can lead the Stems back to the finish going through Nicole’s Roller Coasters?” Kevin asked. “Yea I think so” was her reply. “Good”. “Everybody go with Nicole”, “I am going to continue to rest here and then limp on home”, Kevin directed. “No we can wait and all go back together” was the cry from the pack. “I don’t think you will enjoy riding at 12 mph top end for 17 miles” was Kevin’s plea.
The “stems” all mounted their bikes and headed out under the watchful eye of Nicole.
Doug Augustine, and Steve Ham both elected to stay and keep a watchful eye on “GOG” and to make sure he survived the ride home. Thanks Guys it did help him ride at a more comfortable/faster pace than riding alone.
The following is information provided to the BLOG from Nicole as she led the “Stems” on those last miles back to the finish.
And I quote from Nicole Lewis
“I apoligize for getting these notes to you so late! There's not much
here; mostly because all I remember was the massive amounts of sweat I was
producing, but hopefully it will help.
After we left you guys at the gas station, we sped down the hill and
headed for the left turn. James friend Shawn (not Sean, oops) narrowly
missed being left behind because he didn't take the turn at first. We
rode up to Martha's chapel; the pack split up a bit. I hung back to ride
with Rita in the rear; she was kicking butt! and with no clipless pedals!
(Note: she told me yesterday that she just bought a pair; frankly I'm
scared to ride with her now, she is going to kick all of our butts. Who
did you say had the EPO?) We went past the berry patch; hunger pains
really started to hit us then. The pack was now split into me, Rita,
Davin, and John, and then everyone else. They stayed within eyesight
until about a mile from the divided road that leads to Nicole's roller
coasters. I was pretty sure the first pack (lets call them the Rat Pack!)
missed the roller coaster turn. When they weren't at the turn, we decided
to do the coasters anyways. Apparently, there was some sort of a youth
triathlon or a swim meet or something because on our way down the first
hill we had to doge pedestrians as they crossed the street to the pool.
After the roller coasters, we turned left onto ____(uhhhh)____Rd. and were
approaching the stoplight when Rita said she saw the Rat Pack ride through
the shopping center. I told them we'd take the actual road like REAL
BIKERS and catch up with them at the light at 55. Well, we didn't see
them again until Brueggers. It was a bit windy heading to 55. We crossed
over and then headed down Ron's Pull. It was a struggle! The little pack
dropped John (who headed home) at the beginning of the pull and followed
the sound of our stomachs to the bagel shop. We went through Stone Creek
and Davin told us about how you (Kevin) almost RAN OVER an old lady on
your bike! Or maybe he said that you were almost hit by an old lady in a
car. (We didn't have any bad encounters with rough drivers). Turning
left onto High House, I put up a challenge for the 3 of us. whoever gets
the fastest speed down High House wins the challenge. We didnt have to
wait at the davis drive light so we were able to pick up some prelim
speed. Davin got out in front first, and I was thinking that he won UNTIL
he STOPPED PEDALLING. My turn! I shifted into high gear (ha ha ha ha ha
ha) and pedaled furiously, passing him like a small car! (or scooter).
Final speeds: Nicole = 36.1, Davin = 33, Rita = 30. We biked back to the
parking lot, EXHUASTED but EXCITED ABOUT FOOD!
and then Nicole saved Kevin with her happy beans.
My mom's friend Kim asked me if Sport Beans make you fart. HAHA!
Wow, it's amazing how much you remember when you start writing.”
The stems did around 52 miles at about 17 mph.
The Thorns did 57 miles at about 18.2 mph.
GOG and his support group did 52 miles at under 17 mph.
Another Warm (Hot) humid day was unfolding as the following individuals assembled for the start of the day’s ride.
Those grouping together representing the “Roses” included;
Those assembling for the “Thorns/Stems” included;
Then not in order of age are the not so young riders;
Intervention needed for Steve Cope
Sunday June 7, 2009
Half the size of Saturday’s ride.
Those in attendance included:
Jae Brainard – She rode to the start and was only planning to ride a few miles with the group until she turned back for home.
Theresa Smit
Sheila Augustine
Doug Augustine
Steve Cope – “Capn Carbon”
Josh Carter – “Moving Violation”
Laura Spell
Tim Devinney – “The Love Train”
Tim Travitz – “Slow Tim”
Kevin Smit – “GOG”
And the following new riders to the group.
Debbie Mostek
Paul Eppers
Barbra Wedel
Tek Kornaga
Welcome new riders.
Prior to the day’s ride “GOG” had been given a request from “Moving Violation” and “Capn Carbon” to design the route so they could be on the way back and hook up with the CSH ride. They wanted to make contact with this group at the point where the CSH riders leave the Cary Glenn Neighborhood. It is at this spot that the CSH ride splits into two groups, the A group full of “Hammerheads” and the B group which rides more like the “Stems” on a good day.
So “GOG” considered this as well as the group’s make-up and elected to accommodate the “Thorns” request.
After brief introductions of everyone to the new riders and the explanation to the new riders how the group performs the NO DROP and still allow for periodic attacks by the “Thorns”. It was also at this time that “Cap’n Carbon” gave “The Love Train” grief for wearing a long sleeved shirt on the days ride.
Kevin announced that the day’s ride would cover about 35 miles and will in fact attempt to be headed back to the finish in time for the “Thorns” to peel off and jump in with the CSH ride as it heads out of Cary.
This may become the pattern for all Sunday rides from here on out. That way those who are looking for a recovery ride of about 35 miles can expect that, and those that want to get extra miles can ride the first 2/3rds of the ride with the “Thorns/stems and Roses” and then hook up with the CSH ride.
The group rolled out of the parking lot and headed for the Preston neighborhood. Theresa and Jae took the lead positions, as the newer cyclists were tentative in where they belonged in the pack. The pace was much more realistic compared to Saturday’s blistering start.
The group rode in a clump with no formal draft line forming until the turn onto “Ron’s Pull”. “Cap’n Carbon”, and “Moving Violation” did not have to hold back out of respect for Ron since he was not on the days ride. So those two leaped into action. “Slow Tim” and “the Love Train” knew what was about to unfold and fell into place behind the two lead cyclists. The newer riders were all riding together and had missed the original jump and were forming their own draft line. “GOG” was hoping to again assist Theresa, Sheila and anyone else, who wanted to suck his tire’ to press the pace as they made their way down “Ron’s Pull”. “Grab on” “GOG” shouted to Sheila as he made it clear they were going to attempt to jump the gap. Without hesitation she and Theresa, Laura, and Doug all fell in line as “GOG” began to slowly ramp up the pace. This small group of riders were able to jump the gap of the group ahead and then roll on past as they pushed to the front of that line. The cyclists were now in two groups rather than 3. Up a head Kevin could see that both “Moving Violation” and “Cap’n Carbon” had attacked the leading group and were now both off the front end attacking each other.
A brief pause at the end of “Ron’s Pull” allowed the riders to all regroup and prepare for the fast run along Carpenter Fire Station Road. During this stop “Cap’n Carbon” again asked “The Love Train” why he elected to wear a long sleeved shirt on the ride. “The Love Train” whispered back “because my domestic Bitch has not yet done the laundry”.
After a muffled chuckle by those close enough to hear the whispered response the pack was off onto Carpenter Fire Station road. This stretch of road seems to always produce a quick pace and at the same time keeps all riders in a nice tight single file draft line. Today was no exception as all just feel into place.
“Let’s head into the 3 ugly Sisters” was the navigational instructions provided to the group. This information is only valuable to those who have been riding with the “Thorns and Roses” long enough to know the nicknames of various sections of the routes they frequent.
The “Thorns” responded with proper left turn hand signals so others would understand what was about to take place. This also allowed the “Thorns” to mount another attack against each other as they then made the right turn into the Cary Glenn neighborhood and the 3 hills that lay in the way. Those trailing could only watch as “Cap’n Carbon”, “Moving Violation”, “Slow Tim”, and “The Love Train” all charged on ahead. The trailing riders were caught up in the frenzy as well, as each rider launched their own response that scattered the riders throughout the 3 hills of Cary Glenn. “GOG” held back to make sure the turns were navigated by all and then he too elected to mount an attack on himself. His effort shot him past all, falling just short of catching “Cap’n Carbon”, and “Moving Violation” who were now slowing down as they crested the last hill of the neighborhood. “GOG” felt good about his individual effort and smiled to himself.
The group paused again just long enough to all to gather to the exit point of Cary Glenn. Here the group would be directed to make a left turn followed by the right onto Luter Shop Road.
Luter Shop is a relatively flat 2 – 3 mile stretch of road with a “Sprint to the County Line” in the middle of the run.
Josh – “Moving Violation” was looking to take back his winning ways from Steve – “Cap’n Carbon” who had most recently taken the county line sprint victories.
“Moving Violation” elected to jump very very early. It was his plan to wear “Cap’n” out prior to the actual sprint. Josh is much younger than the seasoned racing veteran “Cap’n Carbon” and assumed the old man would not have the endurance to push early and then sprint. “Cap’n” tucked in behind Josh and sucked his rear wheel. Josh has not learned how to shake off a wheel sucker and continued to pull Steve along the entire run up to the sprint. Then with a crack of the whip the sprint was on and over just as quick. “Cap’n Carbon” was able to raise both hands in victory yet again.
“Wow that was a display of Wisdom over Youth” Laura announced to the pack who all had witnessed the event unfold in front of them.
Josh and Steve slowed enough for the peloton to absorb them. They used the next mile as a recovery period and to relive the sprint with others who were willing to listen.
The pack next made the move onto 751 long enough to travel to the left turn onto Martha’s Chapel.
Here again the “Thorns” all lined up for the race to Jordan Lake. “GOG” elected to hang with the “Stems” as he watched “The Love Train”, “Cap’n Carbon”, “Moving Violation”, and “Slow Tim” all set themselves up for the push to the lake.
Everyone else fell in line behind “GOG” to ride in a more comfortable 21 mph slipstream.
At the Lake the “Thorns” were found circling, as did Kevin and then each of the other “Stems” until all were gathered together once again. It was at this point that Theresa had made the discovery that many of the newer riders were also members of the Sir Walter Raleigh Hash House Harriers. Kevin and Theresa are old Hashers from way back having been members of the San Diego Hash House Harries for over 10 years prior to moving to NC, and then ran with the Sir Walter Hash for another 4 or more years after that. For those of you who do not know about the Hash it is a Drinking Club with a Running Problem. You can go to any major city in the world and find a Hash group. Kevin and Theresa have run with Hashes in France as well as Cities traveled in the US. If you are interested in this running club feel free to talk to Kevin or Theresa about the Hash and what makes it so much fun. After this bit of information was shared with the group about the newer riders “GOG” asked if everyone was ready for “Kevin’s Crawl”.
“GOG” lead out the pack making the left turn onto Farrington as he headed towards the gradual climb away from the lake and to the turn onto Holland Chapel. He began the pace at 17 mph in hopes of having as many folks as possible hang on, as he would then ramp up all the way through the climb.
17 became 19 then 20 then 21 then as he continued to pull through the last 1/3 of the climb Kevin was able to reach 23.7 mph. Looking in his mirror he could see he had gapped all but a few “Thorns” who were also now faltering. Reaching deeper Kevin wanted to push past 24 mph just as the climb got to its steepest point, only to crack himself and now was slowing back down to 21 and then 19 mph. “Cap’n Carbon” could smell the defeat in the rider ahead and used that to jump past those ahead of him and to instantly close the gap placing him squarely in the draft of Kevin’s rear wheel.
Kevin could sense he had just been tagged, and looking in his mirror all he saw was the large wide smile on “Cap’ns “ face. “I need to learn to hold on and push through a little longer”, Kevin Wheezed.
“YUP” was all “Cap’n” said with a hint of gleeful joy, as he again was able to prove his biking prowess.
The two lead riders were found by the pack circling at the left turn on Holland Chapel.
The pack slowed slightly allowing for recovery by “GOG” and to again roll through this section of the route as a group. The chitchat had increased, as the new riders to the group now felt more at home with the other riders.
By the end of Holland Chapel the “Thorns” had once again managed to walk away and were now already thru the turn at the strawberry patch and headed down Luter Shop towards their rendezvous spot with the CSH ride group. They would have one more race to the county line as they were now backtracking towards Cary Glenn.
As the Stems also were covering this same section of road “GOG” announced to the group that the County Line sprint lay just ahead. He then went on to spur both Theresa and Sheila into mounting an attack on one another. As he did this he set the stage for both to jump onto his rear wheel so he could lead them out. Sheila responded, Theresa grunted and looked as if she was willing to be prodded into an attack. It ended up being Sheila and “GOG” who made a run at the county line each racing against and imaginary opponent. It also appeared that Laura had made the jump as well and was also challenging herself to race against an invisible attacker to the county line.
The three each slowed in order to recover and to be pulled back into the peloton. As the Peloton closed in on Cary Glenn they recognized “Cap’n Carbon”’ who was already nipping at the heals of the A group CSH riders. “Teach them a Lesson” Kevin shouted to Steve as they passed by each other. Next the peloton recognized Josh, Tim Travitz, and Tim Devinney as now all the “Thorns” were on their extra miles riding now with the CSH group.
The “Stems” at full strength headed into the Cary Glenn and the same hills they took earlier heading out towards the Lake. The hills going back towards Cary thru this neighborhood are nicknamed “Nicole’s Roller Coaster”. Yes this section of road has two separate nicknames depending on what direction you are traveling.
Sheila was in the lead as all the pack tucked into a streamline downhill racer profile. Just at the bottom of the largest fastest longest downhill two little girls holding hands on roller blades were trying to traverse the road. The youngest became startled and turned back and fell in the middle of the road. Suddenly bikers were scattering in all directions to avoid the little scatters who know were crying and in panic of being run over.
It almost looked like Sheila was trying so hard to be first that she pushed the girls over in a desperate move to try and slow or block the trailing riders. ;-0
She would never do such a thing, although she has been getting a lot more aggressive on the bike. Just keep a close eye on Sheila from now on, especially if it looks like you might pass her on the bike.
All the riders avoided an accident by slowing and dodging the skaters with Theresa stopping to see if she could help the young skaters.
Eventually all made the transition thru “Nicole’s Roller Coaster” and onto Carpenter Fire Station road and the last few miles towards the end.
The pace picked up again at the turn onto Carpenter UpChurch, with this section of road known as “Captain’s Grave Yard”. Yes this is also known as “Ron’s Pull” when traveling in the opposite direction.
“Let’s take the back way home”, Theresa yelled to the front of the pack. Theresa was looking to finish the ride with extra hills, maybe the ride had not been enough of a challenge for this “Rose” turned “Stem”. The pack splintered with Kevin, Doug, and Laura all pulling away from the others.
The group assembled again at the left turn onto Lewis Stevens and the roads that lead into the Preston Neighborhoods. The pace remained under control as all were now working to cool down on these last 2 miles to the finish.
The “Stems” completed 35 miles at a 16 mph pace.
As “GOG” was finishing up stowing his bike he noticed “Capn Carbon” visiting with Paul, Barbra, and Debbie. “You turn back early?” was the question from Kevin to Steve.
“Nope, we rode realy realy hard.” “only 3 of us left standing once we lit it up at the Lake and headed back to Cary” was the reply from “Capn Carbon”.
Steve had ridden with the A group back to Lake Jordan and home in the time it took the “Stems” to finish their last 10 miles. Steve went on to explain that they were averaging well over 27 mph the entire way back from the lake. He also shared the fact that one of the other two who survived the pace back to town with him is a PROFFESIONAL BIKE RACER.
Steve’s next comment shows just how pathetic he has become.
“You know I really should go back out a get in some extra miles” “ I am comfortable with my speed work, but I feel I need more endurance” “Especially if I am going to kick it up a notch”.
“What are you needing to KICK it UP a Notch For” was Kevin’s next question.
“Well you know” was all Steve could think of.
(How sad how truly sad).
Steve needs our help.
Lets all please let him know that it is OK to relax a little and "SMELL THE ROSES" once in a while.
Just then the remaining “Thorns” (Josh, Tim D, and Tim T) all rolled into the parking lot having all ridden 45 miles with the last 20 being much faster than their first 15 with the “stems”.
There maybe the need for even more intervention.
MOB Rule and a hidden apology
Saturday June 6th.
A large crowd gathered for the day’s bike ride.
Kevin had to resort to writing down names of everyone that was in attendance. There would be no way he could remember later who all showed up.
Those in attendance riding with the “Roses” ;
Tracy Clanton
Jae Brainard – the ride leader for this group
Beth Gonzales
Lori Brogden
Ron Clanton – Started with the Thorns and did his obligatory Pull on “RON”S PULL” , maxing his heart rate at 189 then joined his wife to ride part of the route with the “Roses” (How Sweet).
Debra Hollis – Back on her bike after yet another crash – “Crash Test Dummy”
Michelle Causey
Tom Causey
Patti Lewis – “Patty Melt”
Those riding with the “Thorns/Stems”;
Steve Sparano – “Sporadic Sparano”
Steve Cope – “Capn Carbon” – the leader of the “Thorns”
Jeffery Roussel – “Down Hill Racer” - Most improved for this season
Steve Hamalainen (Ham for short) – Back with the group for the first time this season – he is getting in shape for RAGBRI
Eric Hamalainen (Ham for short) – first time riding with the group – came with his dad Steve
Josh Carter – “Moving Violation” - getting faster and faster - doing local races.
Taylor Wofford – first time for her riding with this group – Learned about it from “TriTodd”
Cameron Cooper – first time for him riding with this group – Nicole told him about the group
Rita Beard – first time with the group – Nicole told her about the group – She rode with out cleats.
Tim Travitz – “Slow Tim” – not anymore – he has been blistering the pavement with his speed on the bike.
Doug Augustine
Sheila Augustine – “Rose” working to be a “Thorn”
Don Zelna - new to the sport but already turning into a "Thorn"
Carrie Zelna - also new to the sport - a female version of "Cap'n Carbon"
Tim Devinney – “The Love Train” - also pushing the pace to splintering speeds
Ernest Davis - getting ready for Blood Sweat and Gears
John Majikes – was seen at the start but did not join the group until later on the road – left his shoes at home.
Donte Bergamascao – Friend of Ernest and used to work with Theresa Smit.
Theresa Smit – “Rose” working to become a “Thorn”
Jeff Giordano - another Hammer Head looking for others to punish
Willey (sorry can’t remember his last name) – rides normally with the Hammers heads in the Mello Vello group and with CSH.
Kevin Smit – “GOG” – ride leader of himself and any one that will follow.
So there you have it 31 cyclists, the largest turn out ever for this group. Now Kevin was faced with trying to design a route that would challenge the “Thorns” allow those who started out with the “Thorns” and then get dropped to be picked up by the “Stems”. And what abut the “ROSES”? Previously he had been given strong recommendations of making sure the group did LYSTRA since many are training for BLOOD SWEAT AND GEARS at the end of June. Jae had already said she would be happy to lead the “Roses” so that group was taken care off. Kevin also did not know the skill levels of many of the new or returning cyclists. Some were young wipper snappers from NC State, some veteran “Hammer Heads” from the Wednesday night Mello Vello rides. He also wanted to make sure that at least two of the “ROSES” were allowed to hang with the “Thorns” and “Stems” as they had made it known they are looking to step up the miles, and pace. How to please everyone was the challenge of the day.
“OK, today is a LYSTRA day”, bellowed Kevin, as he was ready to turn the pack loose onto the roads of Wake county. Nothing else was said as the pack immediate split into 4 groups even before leaving the parking lot. Theresa and Sheila were nowhere in Kevin’s mirror as he swung onto High House. How is he going to protect them and help them survive the “Thorns” when they are still back chit chatting with the “Roses”? Don’t they realize they put themselves at risk even before their first pedal stroke of the day? To make matters worse the “Thorns” were already charging hard towards the Preston neighborhood. Normally the pack remains together on High House with the lead riders holding back the pace to at least 13 – 15 mph. Today however the first group was shooting into the turn at Preston and Kevin was off the back of all the “Thorns” riding solo in no man’s land doing 17 mph just to survive what normally would be a short warm-up. As he rolled into Preston – Still no Theresa or Sheila. DAMN.
Kevin now had to make the call of holding way back to pick the two up in hopes of later catching the ever increasing pace of the lead group, or to close that gap now and ask everyone to cool their jets for awhile to let the gals tuck into the pack. He struggled with this dilemma for far too long as the “Thorns” made the turn onto Hogan’s Valley Way and the first climb of the day without regard to who or how many may be trailing. Hogan’s Valley was completed by the “Thorn’s” in record time. Kevin only saw the group as they raced through the green light across Davis drive and towards the round-about that then leads out into the county roads. Kevin hesitated at the light long enough to see the two ladies rolling into position at the intersection. Kevin yelled “Green Light” in an effort to jar the two into a short attack to make the intersection. Nope. They were still in the “Roses” mind set and stalled there allowing the light to turn red. Kevin knew this was a long red light and he wondered if the two trapped riders would think to push the walk button in an effort to shorten the duration of the red, or if they would risk jumping through the red light if no cars were coming. No time to wait and see, Kevin had to find away to get in front of the pack to deliberately reduce its momentum in hopes that the two trailing “Roses” could wakeup to the challenge they had placed on themselves. His only possible move was to sprint hard towards the round-about and then short cut it by turning left rather than right.
SUCCESS.
Kevin was able to jump the gap (by cheating) and was now squarely in the front of the freight train of 20 “Twitchy Thorns”.
No one noticed that Kevin had been in the back (out of sight) and was now in the front. The “Thorns” were in a completely different place than ever before. Little situational awareness, just an aggressive look in each of their eyes. Kevin had never seen this look so early in a ride before. He was confused as to why the group was so anxious to go fast so early, knowing they would be doing LYSTRA. Something was in the air, or maybe someone was egging them on. Kevin slowed his pace expecting the pack to respond to the Ride Leader. With in the blink of an eye the “Thorns” zoomed past and Kevin was all alone again riding solo in No Man’s land still looking in his mirror for the two “Roses” he was to help be initiated into the “Thorn’s”.
CRAP.
Kevin now worked to ride close enough to the “Thorns” to try and shout directions and yet slow enough to catch a glimpse of the two ladies. Doug Augustine had figured out what Kevin was attempting to do as he also fell off the pace to join Kevin in the dead zone.
The chit chat of the “Thorns” faded as they elected to turn right onto “RON’S PULL” without instructions to do so, and again without consideration of where everyone in the pack was. Kevin attempted to inform those ahead that he was going to wait for others who were trailing. The only folks who heard that were Steve and his son Eric who immediately pulled up to oblige.
The behavior of the other “Thorns“ at that point mimicked that of groups like the Mello Vello rides. Those rides are fun for a different reason than the intent of the “Thorns and Roses”. When you show up for a Mello Vello ride you expect to ride till you puke and then limp home on your own as best you can. At least that has been Kevin’s experience and is why he goes to those rides (plus the beer, food and friendship afterwards).
Kevin and Doug both turned back to see if they could spy Theresa and Sheila anywhere in the distance. Slowly out of the humid haze far in the distance came three riders(John Majikes had caught up with the ladies at Davis after having to drive back home to get his shoes) strolling along side by side as if 13 mph was the prescribed speed for the “Thorns”, who were actually at that point now charging down “Ron’s Pull” at well over 28 mph.
“We got caught at the light” Theresa informed Doug and Kevin with a comfortable smile on her face as if it was no big deal.
Didn’t these two gals know they had just put everyone’s life at risk (falling off the pace line is like being taken off of life support)? Didn’t they know that they now are asking for those that waited to now perform at Olympic levels just to possibly regain a spot with the “Thorn’s”? Didn’t they realize that their goal of riding with the “Thorns” had become Doug and Kevin’s only reason for living?
Well know everyone knows.
No words were spoken as the pace line formed behind Kevin. He was already wore out emotionally and mentally so there was little he could do physically to close the gap on the “Thorns”. The group made the run up “Ron’s Pull” at about 10 mph slower than the “Thorns”.
Just as Kevin was trying to determine how he lost control of the ride soooo early he noticed Ron Clanton circling back towards them. Is it possible that someone in the group ahead took a quick inventory to see if all were in tow after “Ron’s Pull”?
Yes there at the intersection was a large group of riders all well rested, eager to attack each other some more, each chit chatting in a joyful tone recounting the last few miles and the speeds attained.
Then suddenly there was dead silence from the group as “GOG” bellowed at them all (as best he could being short of breath).
Scolding the pack of riders as if they were children who had gone out of control on the schoolyard.
“ANY ONE WHO FEELS THE NEED TO CHARGE ON AHEAD WITH NO REGARD FOR THE PACK IS WELCOMED TO DO SO” “HAVE A NICE RIDE ON YOUR OWN”, “I AM COOL WITH THAT”, “HOWEVER THAT IS NOT THE SPIRIT OF THESE RIDES”. “GOG” was spitting out at that moment.
“What, did someone Crash?” was “Cap’n Carbon’s” honest concern.
“NO”, “We had two riders that got trapped at the light on Davis”, “An no one in the group took notice” was the short-winded reply by “GOG”.
“How come you are short of breath” was the rib by “Cap’n Carbon”.
The pack was shocked that “Cap’n Carbon” had the nerve to flip back at “GOG” who was clearly pissed as hell. (the truth is GOG was mad at himself for not clearly communicating at the start the objective of helping the two Roses become Thorns/Stems and that the pack was an integral part of that success).
“Because I am OLD, FAT, and OUT OF SHAPE” was “GOG’s” immediate rebuttal.
“GOG” now struggled with that fact that he clearly had demonstrated he had broken rule #6.
That rule states, “Never Take Yourself TOO seriously”.
The pack was z-Bottom of Form;z-Top of Form;HTML Markup;Comment;embolden by “Cap’n Carbon’s” appropriate ribbing of “GOG” resulting in lots of banter the rest of the day regarding each other’s SPIRT. This was mostly brought out when/if “GOG” rolled into and intersection ahead of anyone else. “Where are you going? – That is not in the SPRIT of these rides” he would hear from the pack.
What a start to a long hilly fast day.
Lesson learned with a group as dynamic as this one, the day’s objectives need to be fully communicated, or just let it unfold, as it will likely do anyway.
The pack now complete in numbers, minus Ron who continued to wait on all the Roses, traveled thru the light at 55 and Carpenter Fire Station. The pace line formed a serpentine structure as 20+ cyclists worked to share the busy two lane road. Kevin had positioned himself in the middle of the pace line to monitor both ends and to ensure Theresa and Sheila were tucked into the draft line. He was also level setting himself on how best to allow everyone to get what they were looking for with the days ride. He needed to accommodate the “Hammer Heads” who would want to continue to attack and press the pace. He needed to accommodate those who wanted to hold onto the “Hammer heads” for as long as possible and yet be assured they could fall back and find a pace and draft line to survive the last miles home. He wanted desperately to help Theresa and Sheila have the best experience on the toughest designed ride of the season for the group. Kevin had never produced a Cue sheet for the day’s ride. He generally has an idea of the route, or distance, or time he would like to introduce to the group. He then alters that based on who shows up and modifies the route on the fly based on how all riders are holding up. Normally Kevin is able to sometimes play with the ride leaders by letting them zoom past a turn (giving them the opportunity to race back and catch the pack who had turned behind them), or to not tell them of the turn forcing them to slow and rejoin the pack to then attack once thru the turn. This style of riding works well with a group that is verily evenly matched, and more intimate in size. This was not going to work on today’s ride. So taking all these new facts into consideration Kevin designed a compromise in his head.
As the group rolled towards the Yates Store intersection Kevin pushed to the front of the draft line and asked “Cap’n Carbon”, “Down Hill Racer”, and “Moving Violation” to circle the pack at the top of “UP CHUCK” until all had made the climb and the right turn at the top. With a nod all agreed to the plan.
Kevin then fell back to his spot in the middle of the draft line.
The attack on “Up Chuck” unfolded out of sight of Kevin. He can only report that it looked like “Cap’n Carbon” made the right turn at the top of the hill just ahead of everyone else.
Kevin arrived and was able to circle just one time before all “Thorns” and “Stems” had made the short but challenging “UP-CHUCK” hill.
“OK Cap’n, take your Thorns and turn em loose. We are planning to stay straight on this all the way to 751, then the left towards Martha’s Chapel and the fast run down it to Lake Jordan”. “You can wait there or go on right to the gas station at LYSTRA and Farrington”. “See you later” was the sendoff provided by “GOG”.
“We are going to do LYSTRA Right?” was the plea from “Cap’n Carbon” to “GOG”.
“GOG” flashed two fingers.
“Cap’n Carbon” looked confused so “GOG” tried to whisper back “we will do it twice”.
“Cap’n” leapt into the saddle, rounded up the troops and danced on down the road with all but “GOG”, Theresa, and Sheila in tow.
The two ladies did a great job on the rolling hills of New Hope Church Road reaching speeds of 21 mph.
Up ahead Doug Augustine and Ernest were both slowing to fall back and join this fast moving tail end of the “Thorns”. This small group now rode together all the way to the next meeting location as described by “GOG” earlier. They worked together up and down the hills maintaining 20+ mph average for the next 8 miles. The effort performed by the two ladies was consistent with the weaker “Thorns” and placed them squarely in the realm of a strong “STEM”.
As “GOG” and his small band of cyclists rolled into the gas station he could sense the “Thorns” were fully rested and up for the LYSTRA challenge.
“DID anyone buy water to top off bottles?” Kevin asked.
“I will get some” replied “Sporadic Steve Sparano”
While Steve went to fetch water for everyone Kevin took a poll to see how many in the group had never done LYSTRA. To his surprise there were at least a half dozen who had never taken the challenge.
“OK you have two choices, Sit and spin, or stand and grind, the hill is about 1 ½ miles of climbing with a false flat in the middle, and then another 3 miles of slight up all the way to 15/501”.
Then there was some side discussion between “Cap’n Carbon” and “GOG” on how to get the pack up the hill and to Big Woods while allowing for those who want to climb twice do so without scattering the pack too much. “Cap’n Carbon” recommended that those who want to climb twice do so by turning after the two steep sections, roll back down, make a u-turn and then climb all the way to 15/501 and everybody regroup there.
“Those looking to ascend the hill twice can go with Cap’n Carbon” “He is planning on climbing to the crest, turn and coast back down then u-Turn and climb it again all the way to 15/501”.
“GOOD LUCK EVERYONE”.
And with that the pack was quick to leave the parking lot, just as the “ROSES” were seen rolling in.
WOW they made great time “GOG” thought to himself as he too headed for the assent on LYSTRA.
Lystra’s climb does not take place right away. There is at least a two-mile stretch of road that hides the climb from view of the cyclist. Then as they make their way around a left hand bend the cyclists are greeted with a wall of black top. As Kevin rounded that corner he saw from afar a long string of cyclists that appeared much like a thin line of worker ants struggling to bring their new found booty back to the ant hill. As he rolled to the bottom of the climb Kevin remembered his advice given to others. Should he sit and spin, or stand and grind. He elected to sit and spin, so keeping rear derailleur aligned with his 3rd gear he attempted to dance on the peddles in an effort to increase the rpms as gravity began to play with his mass. “RATS” this spin thing will not last very long. 3rd gear became 2nd almost instantly. He found himself passing (crawling past) a couple of cyclists. He recognized a couple of them being Rita who you may remember is riding in tennis shoes and platform pedals. As he observed her riding style he realized she was still in the big chain ring on her front crank set. Next he struggled to pass and then be passed back by Taylor and then by Rita.
“I hate Youth” Kevin blurted as the two young ladies walked past him. Kevin then resisted, at least for the first half of the first rise, the temptation to go to granny gear. Just prior to the false flat he popped the chain into Granny – How demoralizing. He then found himself onto the false flat. OK if I stay in granny and spin for just a second or two I might recover enough to charge the second climb in a stiffer gear. Amazing what goes through ones head with lack of Oxygen.
Kevin looked up to check his heart rate monitor for a slight glimpse of a reduced heart rate, only to be met with the sight of “Cap’n Carbon” careening down the hill with “Moving Violation”, Cameron, and “Slow Tim” all in pursuit of “Cap’n”, and each tucked in a downhill racer profile . Others likely followed but Kevin had dropped his head in an effort to avoid the sight of the next wall of black top poised to taunt him even more. Kevin’s next move was to start an internal argument of whether or not he would join in the fun of LYSTRA DUO.
Shifting back into 2nd gear was a morale booster for Kevin, which also forced him out of the saddle to perform the stand and grind technique of hill climbing. Most riders would perform that skill in a much higher gear, but this was the best he could have hoped for at that moment. Then he sat, then he stood, then he sat, then he stood as he and his bike past the two young ladies again to met the crest of Lystra.
Without hesitation Kevin checked both ways for cars and then applying slight pressure on the handlebars he navigated a U-Turn. I can rest all the way to the bottom and then try this again hoping to stay out of granny gear this time, Kevin rationalized. On the way down Kevin saw out of the corner of his eye the “ROSES” who had apparently decided that LYSTRA was on the menu for them as well. They were a bit behind after stopping to “smell the roses” at the gas station. As Kevin turned back at the bottom towards the climb he recognized both Rita and Taylor had also made the decision for LYSTRA DUO. “Not enough of a challenge yet today Ladies?” Kevin asked knowingly.
The second climb was better than the first. Kevin slid past the “Roses”, who were recovering at the crest of the second climb. “Way to go ROSES”, he shouted with an encouraging ring. He and Taylor, and Rita all made their way to 15/501 and the awaiting pack. Without stopping to visit with the group Kevin rolled up to the stop light only to be heckled from the pack, “Where are you going? That’s not the SPIRIT of these rides”. Kevin could only shake his head knowing he deserved all the grief the pack wanted to pile on him for his earlier scolding episode.
Everyone joined him as the light changed and all 20 riders now onto 15/501 heading towards the left turn and long fast downhill of Jack Benett. “We are doing Big Woods” “We can reassemble at the end of that or at the turn from 64 onto Farrington” was the next set of details provided by the route designer, (no longer ride leader – that was lost in the parking lot at Brueggers).
As the pack closed in on the turn they saw Jea Brainard and Tracy Clanton who had elected to climb Jack Benett and then meet the Roses at the top of Lystra. “WOW” the “Roses” really stepped it up in distance, pace, and difficulty. Clearly there was something in the air making everyone perform at a higher level for the day. It was also along this short section of 15/501 that “Cap’n Carbon” informed “GOG” that on the second LYSTRA climb Cameron was riding side by side with “Cap’n” chatting about the trip across the US that “Cap’n” had completed. This amazed “Cap’n” that Cameron could ride so easily at his side, carrying on a conversation, and not be strained by the second assent of LYSTRA. We HATE YOUTH.
The charge down Jack Benett went smooth with traffic doing a fair job of mixing carefully with the bikers. Everyone made a fast sweeping turn onto Big Woods and its undulating hills. The “Thons” really worked to shred the pack on this favorite time trial stretch of road. Buy the time Kevin made it to the end of Big Woods the “Thorns” and “Stems” had fully formed into two groups. The “Thorns” had not waited and continued their attack of each other all the way up Highway 64 to the next gathering spot at Farrington. Those remaining with the “Thorns” included “Cap’n Carbon”, “the Love Train”, “Moving violation”, “Slow Tim”, Willey, Cameron, and Jeff.
The “Stems” now fully aware of survival in the pack worked to make the slow climb from Lake Jordan up highway 64 to the Wilsonville gas stations. “Down Hill Racer” was in the pull position and set a pace that splintered the pack into at least two groups.
The left at Farrington had the “Stems” making the turn while the “Thorns” were found chatting with other bikers who had stopped at the same gas station they did. It did not take long for “Cap’n” and his band of “Thorns” to pull up along side “GOG” and his stand of “STEMS” who were already setting a pace of 19 mph on Farrington. “We are taking Horton Pond, Green Level, and then the bike path on to the finish”, “ You take your group any way you want to on in” Kevin said formally releasing the “Thorns” to ride as hard for as long as they cared without having to wait on anyone else. There was now about 15 miles left until the end.
The “Stems” settled into two packs each riding to protect the individuals doing the group pace. Steve Ham (for short) was working hard to not get gapped off the back with “GOG” keeping him well in sight. Kevin asked the groups to hold up once they got to the end of Horton Pond just to make sure everyone made the next series of turns.
Once at Horton Pond and 751 Kevin was heard saying to Steve “ You picked the longest, fastest, hilliest ride this group has done all season to use as your inaugural bike ride of the season.” Steve Just smiled and then replied “It will be good for me if I survive it”.
And then the pack was off again onto Luther and its rolling hills.
Kevin made an early decision to throw as many hills into the days ride as possible in the 45 – 50 miles they had to work with, and the hills would not end until the last 5 miles of the ride.
The pack of “Stems” again split into two working groups as they traveled the length of Luther. They assembled once again in the “SPIRIT” of the ride to make sure all were safe and given a short rest before heading out onto the three remaining hills for the days ride, as they would travel down Green Level towards the county line and Cary.
There was almost a pile up as the lead riders in the group were having to dodge runners and other cyclists that were traversing the road from the Tobacco trail. In fact one or more of the groups riders may have thought that the bike trail they planned to take into the end was the Tobacco Trail. This was quickly corrected as “GOG” rolled on past those that had slowed and then charged up the last hill of the day.
The turn onto Green Level Church put the group within several feet of the bike path that would lead them home. John Majikes was in the lead and anxious to show all were to make the left turn as he raced into the turn, only to have to lock up his brakes. He overshot the turn missing the narrow passage between posts, and almost ran into the barricade that is in place to prevent cars from driving on the path. His near accident was a signal to all others to slow down and make an easy transition onto the bike path. It also signaled the need to remain slow and to share the path with walkers, families with strollers, dogs, small kids on bikes with training wheels, and joggers. The whole pack relaxed and enjoyed the 12 mile per hour pace saying hello and good morning to all they encountered. Kevin took a quick read on his odometer to see what the average pace had been for the first 40 miles, and noticed 17 mph as the average. That is fabulous for the distance and the number of hills presented in the day’s route. At one point on the bike path it travels thru a tunnel under Highway 55. It is in this tunnel that the young “SPIRIT” of the riders is expressed as each shouts at the top of their lungs a “Primordial Scream of the Conquer”. Everyone’s ears were ringing as they exited the other end of the tunnel, each having added to the decibel count. Everyone traversed the various narrow spots of the bike path without issue. Steve and his Son Eric pulled off the path as it passed within feet of their house. “Great Ride Guys, See you next weekend” as they waved and made their turn to home. The remaining navigational maneuvers had the pack leaving the path onto Davis drive then onto Waldo Rood where “Down Hill Racer” said his goodbye prior to the turn onto Cary Parkway. The pack rode safely down Cary Parkway and into the parking lot at Brueggers. The “Thorns” were already there having charged well ahead. They had elected to follow much of the same route however did not do the cool down on the bike path but rather continued to attack each other on additional hills of Wimberly, Jenks, Holt, and the ugly hill on Jenks Carpenter Road before turning onto High House and the downhill attack that always takes place there.
Comment from Sheila Augustine a "Rose" turned "Stem"
She recalls eariler letting the ride leader know of her desire to step it up but with a contraint.
Sheila was heard at the start saying
"I can't do 50 miles today - i have a time issue"
In the end she commented
"turns out we rode so fast 16-17 mph (not exact) that we were back in time!!
thanks "
So the major difference between the “Thorns” and the “Stems” are as follows:
The “Thorns” hate to wait
The “Thorns” love to attack
The “Thorns” must be controlled at the start of the ride or no one will ever see them until the end
The “Thorns” anticipate every green light, and will shoot through intersections timing their safe passage between cars, and assuming everyone else is looking out for themselves
The “Thorns” love hills and love to dance to the top as quick as possible
The “Thorns” only stop when “GOG” tells them to.
The “Thorns” take no prisoners
The “Thorns” keep score of who is first to the top, or the county line, or city limits
The “Thorns” will tolerate the “Stems” if they have to or until “GOG” turns them loose.
The “Thorns” will chitchat with everyone (only to judge how winded the others are so they can plan their attack against them)
The “Thorns” view 50 miles as a warm-up or recovery level ride.
The “Thorns” know during the ride how many watts they produce and how that is comparing with their heart rate
The “Thorns” never tire
The “Thorns” are plagued at the end of the ride thinking they need to do more miles.
The “Stems” all start out thinking they are “Thorns”
The “Stems” do not chit chat much (they are usually too winded)
The “Stems” are slower at the start of the ride
The “Stems” are not as quick to clip in and take off from stoplights
The “Stems” rarely recognize when an attack is being mounted
The “Stems” suck rear wheels for as long as possible, and as close as possible
The “Stems” fatigue with miles and speed being the contributing factors
The “Stems” accept hills as an element of a good ride and work to not fall below 9 mph on any climb other than LYSTRA.
The “Stems” need rest stops.
The “stems” usually ask each other at the end of the ride how far they went and what the pace was.
The “Stems” usually finish the ride 2 – 3 mph slower on average than the “Thorns” (who could have gone even faster but “GOG” didn’t turn them loose soon enough).
The “Stems” all feel great about their accomplishments and how much they continue to improve.
The “Roses” are consistent in their mission and objectives for riding.
The “Roses” love to start out riding at a pace that allows for casual conversation.
The “Roses” feel good just to be out in the fresh air and to be exercising
The “Roses” possess an untainted SPIRIT of the rides. To stay safe, enjoy each other’s company, and to not take it too seriously.
IT is the intent of these rides to support the goals and objectives of all who bless the group with their presence. We hope you all enjoy the rides and continue to make this a dynamic group and help each other improve to the levels desired.
Remember it is all about the banter and not about the bike.
A large crowd gathered for the day’s bike ride.
Kevin had to resort to writing down names of everyone that was in attendance. There would be no way he could remember later who all showed up.
Those in attendance riding with the “Roses” ;
Those riding with the “Thorns/Stems”;
